Ohio in U.S. devastated by tornadoes

Violent tornadoes in succession have hit the Ohio state in the United States leaving a trail of destruction, there is talk of several victims and injuries while trying to rescue all the people affected by the strong vortices that have devastated homes, overturned cars and uprooted trees as well as swirling debris of all kinds. Violent tornadoes also occurred in Indiana with many injured, then the series of vortices also affected Kentucky. Of note changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues the alarm of researchers on colonies of emperor penguins (a species in danger of extinction) due to the H5N1 avian flu that is spreading in Antarctica; this is a highly pathogenic influenza also found in cormorants and since the animals tend to stay very close together this could increase the percentage of transmission between the colonies.

Heavy rainfall in Argentina with flooding

Soybean fields in Argentina would have been affected by heavy rainfall and there are fears that the harvest for the 2023-24 season could suffer serious consequences (while the wheat harvest for the 2024-25 growing season could perhaps be fine); there is talk of flooding in some areas of the city of Buenos Aires as well as a kind of lightning storm with flashes every second. It will be necessary to deal with the high humidity rate so as not to compromise the health of the plants from any fungi and pathogens, although it is generally better that it rains in abundance rather than the drought experienced previously. Shifting attention to other scenarios, it is worth mentioning the copious snowfall that affected large areas of Colorado in the United States with thousands of homes left without electricity supply and inevitable inconvenience for the population.

A European law on artificial intelligence

A European regulation would have been approved [still not came into force] that seeks to regulate applications based on artificial intelligence that violate the rights of citizens, for example not to be recognized by facial images taken with cameras and processed by algorithms, then the analysis of biometric and sensitive data; this is the first time that action has been taken in this thorny area. In the meantime artificial intelligence developers continue to strengthen the sector with agreements with important and authoritative French and Spanish media, but there is no shortage of controversy over possible copyright abuses with articles used without consent, not to mention that even a company that builds chips that support artificial intelligence was recently accused of using books to train neural networks without consent.

Particulate matter more harmful for children

Children have an organism that has yet to develop and is therefore more susceptible to damage caused by fine particulate matter, then they breathe more frequently and therefore inhale a greater amount of pollutants; at least according to a Thai study that shows that schoolchildren who enjoy better health at school will have better results that they will give back to societies in the future. Thailand has one of the most polluting cities in the world and children would be at great risk of long-term damage to their respiratory system, especially due to PM2.5 particulate matter that is so small that it enters the bloodstream (not to mention that in traffic for example children are closer to car exhausts). Generally children do not understand what happens when they inhale pollutants and simply wonder why their throats burn and cough often.

A protected area at sea around the Galpagos

Off the Galapagos companies that exploit the seas with intensive fishing such as "industrial extraction" would put at environmental risk the islands that host a special biodiversity on the planet with a truly unique fauna and flora; therefore environmentalists propose to create a protected area on the high seas and in the adjacent marine regions in order to protect threatened migratory species and ensure that they can reach the coasts and build nests, raise and feed their young. The current marine protected area established in 1998 would be an exception in a world where only three percent of the oceans are adequately protected. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues difficulties due to the recent floods that have affected large areas in the north-west of Brazil on the border with Bolivia and Peru, are talking about thousands of people evacuated.

   Floods in France and Indonesia

Three people are said to have died and four are missing due to a violent storm in southeastern France, particularly affecting an area north of Nimes where a bridge over the Gardon River was flooded by a torrent of water and mud that swept away a car with its occupants near the village of Dions, then other people were also swept away in Gagnieres in the Gard department and the authorities warn that the situation is still risky due to bad weather and to be careful not to put their lives in danger. As far as Indonesia is concerned, there is talk of floods and landslides with a provisional toll of twenty-six victims and eleven missing due to torrential rainfall that flooded rivers with consequent floods, then interruptions in the energy supply, significant damage also in the Padang Pariaman district.

Australian coral reef to be safeguarded

After monitoring a severe bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian authorities have reportedly declared that they need to do further research to understand how widespread the phenomenon is due to climate change, with warming of the seas (in this case about one degree Celsius for long periods) and consequent expulsion of algae that live in symbiosis with corals giving their tissues their characteristic colors. There is talk of record ocean temperatures with enormous pressure on coral stress and if they don't come down in the next few weeks they will probably die. Some coral species are very hardy and manage to recover, but severe bleaching events now recur so frequently that it is feared that with further warming it will be increasingly difficult for them to recover with full vigor.

   Natural predators alternative to pesticides

Climate change with the increase in carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere and the greenhouse effect affect both crop yields and the dynamics of how pests interact with plants, also increasing their survival rate and a study has shown how natural predators such as birds, beetles, spider and bug could be an effective alternative to pesticides by keeping the population of plant pests under control. Farmers are using more and more chemical pesticides because erratic rainfall with extreme rainfall variability generally makes plants less resistant to pests, but it only takes one species of predator to improve the situation; although it would be better to use more species for the natural functioning of the ecosystem and promote biodiversity.

February the warmest month on record globally

Last month would have been the ninth warmest month in a row on record partly due to an extreme heat wave that affected South America, then in Europe there is talk of the second warmest winter ever. In the first half of February daily temperatures were particularly high with peaks on four consecutive days of two Celsius degrees on average higher than those of the pre-industrial era, and this a few months after the first single day that had exceeded this limit had been monitored. A severe drought has hit Spain even if not with such anomalous temperatures, the oceans (which cover seven percent of the planet and absorb ninety percent of the excess heat produced by human activities) have been on average really warm with significant global climate consequences.

Study on the prolonged effects of the El Nino current

The effects of further warming caused by the global "El Nino" current could last until May with abnormal temperatures, at least according to researchers who argue that even if it is now gradually weakening the impact will continue in the coming months fueling the heat trapped in the atmosphere due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities (the main ones are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide). Of particular concern are the sea surface temperatures which have been persistently and unusually high in the last ten months, and this cannot be blamed solely on El Nino. As always is call for a drastic reduction in polluting emissions to combat climate change because they are unequivocally the main culprits and in practice to a much lesser extent of the El Nino global current.
