Large power consumption of AI
A new challenge regarding energy security and CO2 emission targets derives from the large energy consumption due to the use of applications supported by artificial intelligence and especially the generative one that requires colossal computational capabilities to process the information stored in gigantic archives, at least according to experts that warn that energy demand could double by 2030. The United States, Europe and China currently account for about eighty-five percent of requests to data centers whose energy demands have grown by twelve percent every year for the past five years. A well-known American computer company is allegedly using energy from new nuclear reactors installed on Three Mile Island where a serious accident occurred in 1979 with a core meltdown and radioactive contamination.
