High alert for fires in South Korea

The fire emergency in South Korea continues with the authorities reportedly declaring a high-level crisis, there is talk of at least eighteen victims, nineteen injured, six of whom are seriously injured with devastation that has affected many villages and a historic temple razed to the ground; damage defined as unprecedented and the third event concerning the extension of multiple fires in the history of the country. Rather dry vegetation, strong winds and climate change have hampered efforts to contain the flames, particularly affected the regions of Ulsan and Gyeongsang with five days of fires that have caused unprecedented damage. Power lines and communications in the affected areas have been damaged and there is sometimes talk of chaos in organizing rescue, then the evacuations decided will hardly be able to avoid any other victims and injuries.

Ecocide as genocide and war crimes

Ecocide is defined as the destruction of large areas of the natural environment as a consequence of human activities and should be assessed by international organizations at the same level as genocide and war crimes, at least according to a group belonging to the Pacific island nation (Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa) which request that it be recognized by the Court of Justice in The Hague in the Netherlands (ICC) that can indict individuals who are responsible for the most serious crimes. The proposal had already been put forward in September 2024 and the crime of ecocide was to be added under ICC jurisdiction to the so-called Rome Statute which includes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression; this is also because the damage caused to nature and the entire ecosystem is not being taken seriously enough.

   Forest fires in South Korea

At least four people would be killed and six injured due to a series of wildfires that have affected wooded areas in the south-east of the country, there is talk of damage to residential buildings, a temple; then over fifteen hundred people were evacuated to shelters after the fires burned about six thousand three hundred hectares of forest. More than nine thousand people were also involved in the flames supported by one hundred and five helicopters (three of the victims were firefighters), with difficulty in extinguishing the flames due to rather dry vegetation and wind. To be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues dozens of evacuations due to flooding in areas of central Spain and in the north of the country, it seems that a historic bridge collapsed, then barriers were set up in Toledo; water released from the El Pardo reserve as a precaution.

It is essential to avoid melting glaciers

All nineteen regions covered by glaciers in the world suffered a net loss of mass during 2024 for the third consecutive year in a row, at least according to data monitored by international organizations that underline how essential it is to avoid the total melting of glaciers for reasons that go beyond environmental, economic and social ones. The glaciers that retreated the most and to record levels last year would be those of Scandinavia, Norway in Svalbard and North Asia; then to give an example the retreat of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheet could be quantified in nine billion tons since 1975 (since this type of data began to be recorded). The only solution is to reduce polluting emissions as well as perhaps identify low-temperature areas to be watered regularly to form glaciers to be covered with volcanic ash.

More avian flu infections in the U.S.

The situation regarding the trend of avian flu infections in the United States is not very reassuring according to experts since from 2022 the H5N1 strain has infected chickens, cows and cats; then almost one hundred and sixty-seven million birds infected and seventy people while with spring is speak of migration season (for example to Canada). Recently infections of the H7N9 avian influenza strain have also been monitored in Mississippi, which adds other concerns; in fact, it causes a percentage of deaths higher than H5N1, it seems that almost forty percent of infected humans have lost their lives since this new strain of avian flu was discovered in 2013, so in this case the infected birds were promptly killed. Some say that the H5N1 strain is only missing a genetic step for a potential possible pandemic.

Global warning systems for climate disasters

It is urgently necessary to equip ourselves with warning systems in the event of sudden climate disasters capable of guaranteeing coverage of the entire planet, at least according to a report by international organizations that underline how last year hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes to escape extreme weather events. The data concerning climate disasters would have been collected and monitored since 2008, these data do not only concern economically disadvantaged countries as happened for example in Mozambique where about one hundred thousand people were evacuated due to cyclone "Chido", but also countries that enjoy relative wealth as happened in Spain in Valencia where two hundred and twenty-four people lost their lives due to floods and Canada and the United States affected by devastating fires.

   Pipeline rupture in Ecuador

The Ecuadorian authorities who had declared a state of emergency over the rupture of an oil pipeline in the northwest of the country have reportedly declared that the situation has worsened; in fact, it seems that hundreds of thousands of users cannot use the water due to the pollution of the Esmeraldas river which has become very dark in color due to the spillage of a lot of oil for a landslide from the large pipeline (Ecuadorian Pipeline System SOTE); there are also fears of environmental disaster despite the fact that the pipeline has been closed to carry out repairs. To be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues of the floods in Spain in Andalusia due to intense rainfall and cloudbursts with inconvenience for the population in the areas affected by flooding that sometimes forced rescuers to emergency interventions in flooded houses.

Vertical wing of aircraft on experimental cargo ship

To reduce fuel consumption and therefore pollutant emissions a vertical wing of an aircraft was mounted on the bow of a cargo ship on an experimental voyage from England to Canada, according to the designers it works by accelerating the wind air passing through its surface to propel the ship with a technological aerodynamic system already used in the sports field for very fast vehicles and boats. This is a project promoted by the British administration that is part of a maritime decarbonization program, the ship must be modified by adding an imposing and heavy steel structure and seven and a half kilometers of electrical cables as well as finding space for the vertical wing, then it will also be necessary to mount cameras, additional lights, various components and radar to remedy the loss of visibility from the deck of the ship.

Tornadoes in several states in the Midwest of U.S.

There would be dozens of victims (over thirty) due to violent tornadoes due to an atmospheric low pressure system that affected Missouri and Mississippi in particular in the United States, we are talking about at least twenty-five vortices some so strong as to overturn heavy vehicles that left a trail of destruction in their passage sometimes almost razing houses to the ground and uprooting trees, leaving a large number of debris on the ground, dust storms; then the authorities also evacuated hundreds of people. It seems that in March it is not unusual for strong tornadoes to occur, but the damage monitored is truly remarkable. Shifting attention to Italy to report that some locations in Emilia Romagna and Tuscany regions are still flooded after the recent wave of bad weather, although the situation is improving and damage is being monitored.

Bad weather in Emilia Romagna and Tuscany in Italy

Floods and landslides have affected areas of Emilia Romagna and Tuscany regions, there is talk of red alert, isolated families and evacuations; then the level of the Arno river is high with schools closed in Florence and fears of flooding in Pisa. Various locations have been affected due to hydrogeological instability, particularly affected for example Brisighella and Sesto Fiorentino; generally damage to flooded crops and complained about by the inhabitants who find themselves with flooded houses, it also happens that private land practically acts as expansion basins absorbing water but quickly reaching the point of saturation. To be noted changing the subject a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in the province of Foggia in Puglia region that caused buildings to sway even in Bari and many places without causing damage (although checks are still in progress) and a magnitude 3.5 quake at Campi Flegrei.
