Study on temperatures and microplastic release

Many studies have focused on how many microplastics are present in water, but all liquids that are consumed contain them, in particular it seems that coffee, tea, drinks, juices, and energy drinks significantly contribute to reaching the daily amount of these unhealthy microplastics. A connection between temperature and microplastic release has also been observed with hot tea showing the highest concentration, and heat appears to accelerate this release from the plastic packaging materials of the product (the tea bag had previously been noted). It is necessary to evaluate total exposure to microplastics from all beverages to have a more complete picture if one does not want to underestimate the actual level of exposure.

Eating habits are destabilizing the planet

Almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions come from food, at least according to one study which highlights key factors such as the environmentally harmful role of methane released by cattle, deforestation to make room for crops and the use of fossil energy for fertilizer production. Moreover, even if we stopped burning fossil fuels our eating habits tend to push global temperatures above the set limit of one and a half degrees Celsius of warming. The harmful impact includes loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, water scarcity, and pollution from fertilizers, resulting in an overall alarming situation. As for the dietary regime to follow it is recommended to eat fruits and vegetables with limited consumption of meat and fish, which would also help prevent fifteen million premature deaths.

Food shortages in the Gaza Strip and Darfur

According to international organizations the evacuation of the population from the city of Gaza due to the conflict that has affected the area for decades could cause severe food shortages as well as shortages of shelter and medical support more so than evacuations that took place in other parts of the Gaza Strip. Previously there had been protests regarding how the distribution of food and humanitarian aid was organized with people including children killed while trying to obtain some food and in the case of the evacuation of Gaza City the situation can only be much worse. As for Darfur in Sudan also due to military conflicts there have been reports of severe food and water shortages for a year particularly in the city of El-Fasher (the largest inhabited center in western Darfur) with people dying of hunger, then there are fears of cholera outbreaks.

Accelerated plasticization of the planet

Given that at a recent conference in Geneva in Switzerland where a plan was to be decided to reduce plastic production there was widespread confusion among the participants and the plan was adrift it is clear that the direction towards a "plasticization of the planet" appears to be increasingly accelerated. It is estimated that with the current trend of plastic production based on fossil fuel consumption production will triple by 2060 reaching about one billion two hundred million tons per year, with one billion tons dumped into the environment risking entering the food chain. It is evident that if we consume microplastics and even breathe them the organic tissues will be exposed to inflammation as has long been shown in animals along with a whole series of side effects for which there are now even studies.

Adaptation of crops to climate change

A significant decline in crops is expected in the coming decades according to some studies for example for wheat and cereals due to global warming, but appropriate adaptation practices by farmers could make a difference, which could limit the spike in prices of all foods that have wheat and cereals as ingredients, the production of which is anyway destined to decrease even while trying to adapt to climate change. Among the strategies to adopt there is talk of planting different varieties with fertilizers and irrigation targeted to those specific varieties, then some argue that it is necessary to monitor plant health with specific tools so that they are not attacked by pests; indeed, a struggling crop becomes more susceptible to diseases and the yield tends to decrease drastically due to the self-defense mechanisms of the seedlings.

A plastic that dissolves quickly in the sea

A potential solution to plastic pollution in the oceans threatening marine life comes from Japanese researchers (in a laboratory in Wako, Saitama prefecture) who have reportedly demonstrated that the new type of plastic they tested dissolves in a container filled with salt water in about an hour and leaves no residues, thus not fragmenting into particles and then into dangerous microplastics. While waiting for this new type of plastic to enter production, it is advisable to avoid dispersing plastic into the environment; in fact, it enters the food chain and is inhaled as microplastic. A study indicated that it tends to accumulate in higher concentrations in the brain compared to other organs and if a blood test is conducted it is possible to find the presence of microplastic particles with consequences still not well understood, but certainly unhealthy.

Forecast on the increase in egg prices in the U.S.

It is expected that the price of eggs in the United States could increase by over forty percent, and the price has already risen significantly on supermarket shelves. Sometimes it happens that they are hard to find, which is due to the fact that thirty million laying hens have been culled to limit the spread of avian influenza in the country. With the approach of the Easter holidays, a significant increase in the demand for eggs is expected, but prices are already high and availability is low, so it is thought that the market may reach price peaks. There have also been reports of thefts of entire pallets full of egg cartons and smuggling of eggs from neighboring countries; some say that the desire to eat them diminishes because they are so expensive. It is worth noting that cereals combined with legumes and a little grated cheese are an excellent complete and economical protein source.

Some timid initiatives against PFAS

Perfluoroalkyl (PFAS) are very persistent pollutants whose molecule is almost indestructible and tends to accumulate in the body, a danger for every living organism; so they try to regulate their use and it seems that France has decided to partially ban their use, but excluding from the law the famous pans that are usually used as an example of how PFAS can be ingested with food especially if the pans are striped (in this case they should be thrown away). Another area that would require urgent regulation is that relating to plastic pollution after the discovery that microplastic particles tend to accumulate in greater concentration in the brain than in other organs, decisive action should be taken in cases where plastic residues can reach rivers and streams.

Proposals for coffee cultivation in new countries

Climate change has caused coffee production to drop in many countries such as Brazil and Vietnam where fluctuating rainfall has favored the formation of mold, fungi and plant diseases, with a consequent rise in prices also because demand generally remains quite high (but declining in Europe), so to balance this reduction there would be proposals for new crops in countries less affected by climate change or where now there seem to be more favorable climatic conditions such as Togo, Ivory Coast and Kenya in Africa. There has been talk of records lately for the prices of Arabica quality beans (the most valuable and with the greatest healthy characteristics) and also partially for the prices of robusta, so action should be taken to improve productivity by preventing growers discouraged by climate change from neglecting plant care.

Alcoholic drinks in America labeled as carcinogenic

The majority of Americans are not aware of the risk of carcinogenicity of alcoholic drinks, so according to the health authorities of the United States they should be labeled as carcinogenic a bit like cigarettes; in fact, there would be four mechanisms that can promote the formation of tumors: alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde which damages DNA, increases oxidative stress with consequences for proteins and cells, modifies hormone levels including estrogen (responsible for breast cancer risks), increases the absorption of carcinogens including those linked to tobacco. The quantities of two glasses of alcohol for men a day and one for women should perhaps be reviewed, however generally low doses of wine especially red and dark, therefore rich in antioxidants, is considered healthy if of quality (pressing the grapes with the traditional method).
