Adaptation of crops to climate change

A significant decline in crops is expected in the coming decades according to some studies for example for wheat and cereals due to global warming, but appropriate adaptation practices by farmers could make a difference, which could limit the spike in prices of all foods that have wheat and cereals as ingredients, the production of which is anyway destined to decrease even while trying to adapt to climate change. Among the strategies to adopt there is talk of planting different varieties with fertilizers and irrigation targeted to those specific varieties, then some argue that it is necessary to monitor plant health with specific tools so that they are not attacked by pests; indeed, a struggling crop becomes more susceptible to diseases and the yield tends to decrease drastically due to the self-defense mechanisms of the seedlings.

A plastic that dissolves quickly in the sea

A potential solution to plastic pollution in the oceans threatening marine life comes from Japanese researchers (in a laboratory in Wako, Saitama prefecture) who have reportedly demonstrated that the new type of plastic they tested dissolves in a container filled with salt water in about an hour and leaves no residues, thus not fragmenting into particles and then into dangerous microplastics. While waiting for this new type of plastic to enter production, it is advisable to avoid dispersing plastic into the environment; in fact, it enters the food chain and is inhaled as microplastic. A study indicated that it tends to accumulate in higher concentrations in the brain compared to other organs and if a blood test is conducted it is possible to find the presence of microplastic particles with consequences still not well understood, but certainly unhealthy.

Forecast on the increase in egg prices in the U.S.

It is expected that the price of eggs in the United States could increase by over forty percent, and the price has already risen significantly on supermarket shelves. Sometimes it happens that they are hard to find, which is due to the fact that thirty million laying hens have been culled to limit the spread of avian influenza in the country. With the approach of the Easter holidays, a significant increase in the demand for eggs is expected, but prices are already high and availability is low, so it is thought that the market may reach price peaks. There have also been reports of thefts of entire pallets full of egg cartons and smuggling of eggs from neighboring countries; some say that the desire to eat them diminishes because they are so expensive. It is worth noting that cereals combined with legumes and a little grated cheese are an excellent complete and economical protein source.

Some timid initiatives against PFAS

Perfluoroalkyl (PFAS) are very persistent pollutants whose molecule is almost indestructible and tends to accumulate in the body, a danger for every living organism; so they try to regulate their use and it seems that France has decided to partially ban their use, but excluding from the law the famous pans that are usually used as an example of how PFAS can be ingested with food especially if the pans are striped (in this case they should be thrown away). Another area that would require urgent regulation is that relating to plastic pollution after the discovery that microplastic particles tend to accumulate in greater concentration in the brain than in other organs, decisive action should be taken in cases where plastic residues can reach rivers and streams.

Proposals for coffee cultivation in new countries

Climate change has caused coffee production to drop in many countries such as Brazil and Vietnam where fluctuating rainfall has favored the formation of mold, fungi and plant diseases, with a consequent rise in prices also because demand generally remains quite high (but declining in Europe), so to balance this reduction there would be proposals for new crops in countries less affected by climate change or where now there seem to be more favorable climatic conditions such as Togo, Ivory Coast and Kenya in Africa. There has been talk of records lately for the prices of Arabica quality beans (the most valuable and with the greatest healthy characteristics) and also partially for the prices of robusta, so action should be taken to improve productivity by preventing growers discouraged by climate change from neglecting plant care.

Alcoholic drinks in America labeled as carcinogenic

The majority of Americans are not aware of the risk of carcinogenicity of alcoholic drinks, so according to the health authorities of the United States they should be labeled as carcinogenic a bit like cigarettes; in fact, there would be four mechanisms that can promote the formation of tumors: alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde which damages DNA, increases oxidative stress with consequences for proteins and cells, modifies hormone levels including estrogen (responsible for breast cancer risks), increases the absorption of carcinogens including those linked to tobacco. The quantities of two glasses of alcohol for men a day and one for women should perhaps be reviewed, however generally low doses of wine especially red and dark, therefore rich in antioxidants, is considered healthy if of quality (pressing the grapes with the traditional method).

Unstoppable global plasticization

It is estimated that over three hundred and fifty million tons of plastic are thrown into the waste every year, less than a tenth is recycled and over a fifth end up in the environment damaging the health of humans and all kinds of living creatures. At an international conference in South Korea in Busan the issue was discussed, but apparently no solutions are found to a problem that according to forecasts will only worsen in the coming years, since the demand for plastic remains very high and recycling does not work or works very little; in fact, from two hundred and thirty tons in the year 2000 it has gone to four hundred and sixty in 2019, then in practice ninety-one percent of this plastic ended up in landfills, burned or disposed of directly in the environment. On an interconnected planet plastic sooner or later ends up in the food chain and is breathed in as microplastic.

Too much plastic film used in agriculture

The use of plastic film strips on the ground on a large scale for the cultivation of wheat is having a significant impact on agriculture in the areas of Quebec in Canada so much so that some are asking for studies to be done on this product which should be biodegradable, but doubts remain whether it cannot release plastic microparticles into the environment. In particular it is estimated that the use of this plastic mulch for example in one region (Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean), has increased by more than ninety percent in the last seven years, so it is a rampant practice that is also disfiguring the landscape. Since plastic remains in the environment for years, it risks polluting waterways and then groundwater and not knowing the real ecological impact, it is a problem considered critical by the locals.

Poverty in the world for over a billion people

The difficulty of having a decent standard of living and at the same time fearing for one's safety concerns a large number of people in the world, then it is estimated that over a billion people live in extreme poverty (children would be about half); then, for example, the conflicts that are upsetting the planet frustrate the efforts made to reduce poverty. India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo are the countries with the highest number of people in extreme poverty. Some speak of migrations caused by climate change and the abandonment of previously cultivated land, this is also due to a lack of appropriations and aid to deal with new unforeseen situations (which often require structural interventions) and this leads to a vicious circle with scarcity on the global food market and consequent continuous rise in prices.

More responsible use of plastic

In laboratory tests it has been seen that microplastics are harmful to a group of animals examined, so the researchers wonder why humans should be different and put forward the proposal to at least ban the use of plastic where it has been shown that it directly pollutes the environment, then act on all that large mass of plastic that then becomes microplastic and pay attention in general to all the plastic that is used daily also taking into account tires and textile fabrics (in the latter case, of course, buy garments in natural fabrics that are also healthier). Microplastics are now present everywhere on the planet even in the most remote areas and even incorporated into the corals of the seabed, then they easily end up in the food chain and often it is enough to analyze a food to find them.
