Climate disaster in Pakistan

It is estimated that about one thousand seven hundred people have lost their lives in Pakistan due to what is defined as the worst climate disaster ever happened in the country with floods from monsoon precipitation and storms on land that became arid and not ready to absorb the enormous amount of water for previous severe heat waves. There is talk of millions of people evacuated and in the province of Sindh many villages are still flooded or surrounded by stagnant water (which can promote diseases by contaminating drinking water). Arable land allows the survival of the population are destroyed considering that even the animals bred have failed to survive, particularly harsh living conditions in rural areas. To report shifting the attention to other scenarios the severe famine in Somalia due to the prolonged drought caused by climate change.

Reducing methane emissions with probiotics

It is possible to reduce methane emissions from cattle and sheep with probiotics by about twenty percent, at least according to the first results of a study conducted in New Zealand that aim to progressively reduce these methane emissions by ten percent from 2017 levels by 2030 and forty-seven percent by 2050. It is a beneficial natural solution for animals whose digestive system produces methane when it digests vegetation and which has no effect on milked milk, then a method is studied to make sure that the manure has lower emissions. Apparently there are already additives on the market that reduce emissions by about thirty percent and we must also consider that the easiest method to cut emissions is to reduce production or have fewer animals and planning the different factors.

Little honey in hives in the world

There are many countries that complain of a honey harvest that is often rather poor and of poor quality; in fact, the plants due to the drought have made fewer flowers bloom and produced less nectar, then the almost absence of flowering of the meadows in the summer period for heat waves has further worsened an already difficult situation. It seems that some Canadian researchers are testing chemical components to counteract the action of parasites that sometimes infest hives (a problem that frequently occurs with climate change). To try to help the activity of bees there are also technological systems that keep under control ventilation, temperature and humidity of hives as well as other parameters useful to increase honey production, but if we do not act globally to ban the use of pesticides harmful to bees and counteracting climate change it is clear that the situation in the future will only worsens.

Non-potable rainwater in the world

Due to high levels of PFAS, toxic chemical components that degrade very slowly in the environment, rainwater may not be drinkable wherever in the world it is collected (even in Antarctica and Tibet); at least according to a study by Swedish researchers who point out how man has made the planet inhospitable to human life by contaminating it irreversibly. These PFAS initially found in packaging, shampoo and makeup are so persistent that they will never degrade and once ingested tend to accumulate in the body with unhealthy side effects such as fertility problems, proper development of children, obesity, some cancers, cholesterol levels. We have to live with them even if the latest guidelines have allowed us to reduce their concentration.

Heat waves and droughts in Europe

The increase in the costs of food related to the heat waves and droughts that are affecting many European countries worry the authorities who call for the reuse of purified waste water to irrigate the fields as well as careful management of water resources, paying attention for example to repairing leaks in the plants. In France rainfall in July was just twelve percent of what was required by the agricultural sector with inevitable consequences on wheat and corn crops of which the country is among the five largest producers in the world (considering that the conflict in Ukraine is putting pressure on this type of production). In Spain the olive harvest is hampered by an unprecedented drought with a noticeable drop in oil production and even in Portugal, Great Britain and Italy the situation is not favorable regarding drought.

Don't waste food to avoid wars

Millions of tons of food end up in the garbage every year and researchers warn that food waste as well as feeding the greenhouse effect and therefore climate change, with an unbalanced environmental cycle that will lead to agricultural crops of ever lower quality and quantity, could trigger wars for the control of land useful for the sustenance of billions of individuals (it is expected, for example, that the atomic arsenal will grow in the coming years to the first time since the end of the so-called "Cold War"). Should also pay attention to what kind of food to buy favoring locally sourced seasonal fruits and vegetables, avoid meats (pasta-rice and legumes with a little grated cheese are an excellent healthy and balanced substitute), processed foods, fried ones and then preserve food appropriately.

Suspension of wheat exports from India

The consequences of India's immediate ban on wheat exports due to the heat wave that is affecting the country and to try to limit the rise in wheat prices on local markets could cause tensions on global ones. Many poor countries already face a decline in crop yields due to climate change, then the conflict in Ukraine is hindering the export of wheat from the country's ports, an important resource for example for the countries of North Africa that see the cost of wheat-based foods rise day by day. There are also a number of other problems such as the global increase in the prices of fertilizers, agricultural tools, fuels and even the oil market is grappling with various difficulties after the decision taken in April by Indonesia to ban palm oil exports.

Tensions in the markets for certain foods

Oil supplies to global markets are on the list that could be affected by the many tensions on global markets, for example the unpredictable decision of Indonesia to suspend the export of palm oil (the world's leading producer) risks having consequences on the export of other oils considering that the food industry of many countries will have to find substitutes; then apparently now India imports from Malaysia the unhealthy palm oil (often also cause of deforestation and naturalistic imbalances for the intensive cultivation of oil palms). Of note changing the subject the lack on the shelves of the United States of infant formulas for breastfeeding that are almost impossible to find even if mothers are generally advised to breastfeed for at least the first six months, but stress and anxiety force them to resort to these substitutes.

Food increasingly expensive worldwide

The monitored prices of some foods globally had already increased in about mid-2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic for example with difficulty finding staff for work in the fields and to drive trucks loaded with fruits and vegetables, then in 2021 in Brazil (the largest exporter of soybeans) a severe drought had hit crops with knock-on consequences on other foods. In China it seems that the wheat harvest this year is among the worst, then Indonesia has banned since April all exports (of the unhealthy) palm oil to ensure domestic needs. The impact of the conflict in Ukraine is significantly worsening forecasts on the price of flour and barley, and many countries are concerned about the reaction of populations to these increases. Among the countries most at risk for food crises Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Haiti, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Assessments of global food crises

A number of factors such as climate change, scarce availability of fertilisers, high fuel costs and a whole range of tools used for agricultural practices (determined by conflicts and tensions in the energy market) could cause global food crises. For example entire crops could be almost completely lost due to drought and the impossibility in some countries to proceed with normal cultivation due to conflicts, then we must also consider the death of pollinating insects due to aggressive pesticides. Further difficulties that make the situation even more complex derive in some cases from the n-Cov pandemic that must be managed carefully regarding the containment measures of infections. Precision agriculture, protection of the territory and prudent use of agricultural resources will be indispensable.
