New estimates on recent heat victims in Europe

The high temperatures during the summer, with a series of heatwaves from Italy to Germany and France, where temperatures exceeded forty-six degrees Celsius in Spain and Portugal, may have caused sixteen thousand five hundred victims in Europe; researchers who focused on over eight hundred and fifty urban areas recorded temperatures 3.6 degrees higher from June to August due to climate change, but this represents only a third of the population so the death toll is certainly higher. With the heat the heart struggles to pump blood and the elderly sweat less with reduced ability to regulate their temperature; other studies estimate more than sixty thousand total deaths in 2022 and forty-seven thousand in 2023, emphasizing how Europe has become an example of the extreme effects of climate change with significant consequences on activities and especially in the tourist sector.

The ozone hole may shrink in the coming decades

The ozone hole over Antarctica could decrease to the point of disappearing in the coming decades, demonstrating that international action regarding the important protective layer of the Earth is achieving its goals; in fact in 2024 the hole was smaller than in recent years. In 1975 a convention was followed by the Montreal Protocol which allowed for the banning of harmful gases to the ozone layer mainly found in household refrigeration, air conditioning, and aerosol sprays. To report changing the subject but still on natural topics that the Amazon rainforest has reduced by an area the size of Spain in about forty years perhaps approaching a point of no return, as the rain cycle is disrupted and a dry savanna is growing instead of forest.

Severe drought in Atlantic regions of Canada

The map of the water situation in many Atlantic regions of Canada provided by Canadian authorities shows areas where drought reaches extreme values, particularly affecting almost the entire province of Prince Edward Island, while in parts of Labrador conditions are said to be normal; but again for areas of Newfoundland values range from abnormal drought to extreme, especially in parts of the Avalon Peninsula affected by wildfires during the summer, then New Brunswick and Nova Scotia from moderate to severe. In the Annapolis Valley some areas suffered through the worst August in terms of rainfall with a record low of less than fifteen millimeters, followed by drought for Charlottetown and Saint John. Bans on lighting fires, access to land, and measures to save and appropriately manage water reserves have been issued.

Floods on the island of Bali in Indonesia

There would be at least nine victims this week on the island of Bali in Indonesia with about six hundred people affected by intense rainfall lasting for days, it seems that major street reportedly inaccessible in the capital Denpasar and famous tourist locations difficult to reach. Two hundred people have been evacuated and accommodated in schools and religious facilities, then hardships for the population forced to move through water, not to mention the goods in flooded businesses. Four victims have also been reported in East Nusa Tenggara due to the heavy rains and subsequent flooding. To report changing the subject but staying on natural topics that it is estimated that wildfires in Canada have caused five thousand four hundred deaths worldwide due to related causes (the mortality rate varies depending on the calculation method used) and about eighty-two thousand premature deaths.

A large dam in Ethiopia worries Egypt

The largest dam in Africa built on a tributary of the Nile in Ethiopia risks further reducing the flow of the second longest river in the world in Egypt, especially during periods of drought; the flow has already decreased for years due to climate change, although the authorities in Addis Ababa assure that water resources will be shared fairly. This dam construction of which began in 2011 will provide electricity to millions of homes, but Egypt relies on Nile waters for ninety percent of its needs and fears it could lead to the construction of additional dams. To report shifting the attention to other scenarios the suffering of glaciers in the Alps with many Swiss villages threatened by their melting, and the alarming situation of the Marmolada glacier in Italy, then the migrations due to flooding in Punjab in India.

Over a million hectares burned in Europe

It is estimated that over a million hectares of vegetation-covered land have gone up in smoke in Europe this year due to wildfires, an area figuratively larger than Cyprus and the largest since monitoring of such data began in 2006. Spain and Portugal have been the most affected countries accounting for about two-thirds of the total, with ongoing wildfires still reported in Spain; the country also recorded sixteen days of record temperatures that fueled the blazes. To report shifting focus to Japan that with ten days of temperatures of thirty-five degrees Celsius and above in Tokyo have marked an unhealthy record for the great metropolis, while a heat wave is also affecting British Columbia in Canada and particularly the town of Lytton and the community of Fraser Canyon with record temperatures.

Multiple uncontrolled fires in Canada

Authorities are said to have planned extensive evacuation orders for residents of Nova Scotia affected by the Long Lake fire in Annapolis County, which continues to strengthen due to strong winds and high temperatures. This is described as an extreme event affecting roads and other communities; firefighters' efforts are thwarted by gusts of wind that fuel the flames. Evacuation orders are also in place for residents of New Brunswick with twenty active fires three of which are out of control. Shifting the focus to Italy to report that along the coast between Cervia and Rimini in Emilia Romagna region a type of hurricane (supercell) has uprooted many maritime pines and damaged beach establishments, causing flooding and various inconveniences, such as trees falling on cars and blocking roads.

Excessive demand for tropical wood in Indonesia

To manufacture recreational vehicles especially in the United States woods are used that cause deforestation in Kalimantan in Indonesia, at least according to an environmentalist investigation into this type of entertainment industry. In Kalimantan there are orangutans, long-nosed monkeys, leopards, macaques, flying foxes-bats and the smallest rhinos on the planet; thus, their habitat is threatened. Indonesia is a country that besides suffering from the problem of deforestation, apparently plans to allocate more funds for fossil fuels and coal than for renewable energy in its 2026 budget. It is worth mentioning changing the subject but remaining on nature-related themes the demonstrations in Spain in Ourense for forest protection since many devastating wildfires are still active in the country.
