Zoster vaccine possibly decreases dementia

Getting vaccinated against the varicella-zoster virus (shingles or so-called "St. Anthony's Fire") could get dementia minus twenty percent, at least according to a study still in the early stages that would have found greater effectiveness in women, but researchers warn to remain above all socially and intellectually active as well as controlling blood pressure and for diabetics to control high blood sugar values that would always be linked to cognitive decline. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on health issues that often the diseases caused by fungi are becoming more and more resistant to available medicines and this can lead to serious consequences and even to the death for example of patients affected by mucormycosis, is talk about climate change that favors the proliferation of fungi and how we try to find a solution in these cases.

Significant health challenges in Myanmar

The lack of water, hygiene and basic necessities after the strong earthquake that struck Myanmar (there is talk of over two thousand seven hundred victims, four hundred and forty missing and four thousand five hundred injured) are causing considerable health difficulties in the country and international organizations warn to intervene with aid before the monsoon season; also considering that many people do not have a shelter and live on the streets. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on health issues that to combat microorganisms that have developed antibiotic resistance, researchers have recently experimented with a new class of antibiotics that could be used for new antimicrobial medicines useful in potentially life-threatening situations, such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections; but we're still in the early stages of development.

More avian flu infections in the U.S.

The situation regarding the trend of avian flu infections in the United States is not very reassuring according to experts since from 2022 the H5N1 strain has infected chickens, cows and cats; then almost one hundred and sixty-seven million birds infected and seventy people while with spring is speak of migration season (for example to Canada). Recently infections of the H7N9 avian influenza strain have also been monitored in Mississippi, which adds other concerns; in fact, it causes a percentage of deaths higher than H5N1, it seems that almost forty percent of infected humans have lost their lives since this new strain of avian flu was discovered in 2013, so in this case the infected birds were promptly killed. Some say that the H5N1 strain is only missing a genetic step for a potential possible pandemic.

Measles cases in the United States and Canada

Health authorities report a decrease in measles vaccinations due to some epidemic outbreaks; in fact, this viral disease can also be very dangerous, especially in children under the age of five. This virus can easily spread through the air, causing cough, fever, reddish and pink spots on the skin, and can lead to respiratory and neurological complications, pneumonia, and brain damage. For children meningitis and encephalitis can cause health issues that last a lifetime, so it is undoubtedly healthy to vaccinate them with two doses, generally the first at twelve to fifteen months of age and the second before starting school, which helps protect the entire body. Ten days is the incubation period for the measles virus, and spots (rash) often appear on the face and mouth.

A new coronavirus under study

The new coronavirus discovered by researchers belonging to the merbecovirus subvariant has been called Hku5-Cov-2 and like the SARS-CoV-2 virus it exploits the same infection mechanism (the spike protein) to infect cells and therefore able to infect humans. It is potentially pandemic but it seems that it is less virulent than risky variants of SARS-CoV-2 even if it is necessary to maintain high attention and continue to monitor the situation. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on health issues that Canada would have purchased five hundred thousand doses of vaccines to protect the people most at risk from avian flu in the event of exposure and even indirect contact with infected animals such as saliva, mucus and feces; then there are cases in the United States in which humans have infected domestic cats with avian flu.

Avian flu disinfection in New York

The New York authorities would have announced five days of suspension of market activities to proceed with cleaning and disinfection due to cases of avian flu infections; a measure that extends to the counties of Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau to prevent further spread of infections. There is talk of some health concern even if for the moment international organizations say that the risk to the population from H5N1 avian influenza remains low, but recently a man (already in precarious health conditions) died after being exposed to the contagion of a "combination" of viruses from poultry and wild birds. Since April nearly seventy people in the United States have been infected with bird flu, most of them people who had been infected for close contact with saliva, mucus and animal feces.

Prevention in rat-infested cities

Climate change could worsen the situation in cities already infested with rats, at least according to a study that showed the correlation between average temperatures and rat populations in these cities. Apparently these rodents like higher temperatures and this has already been monitored in eleven cities (such as New York, Washington, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Toronto..) known for difficulty in limiting the rat population; therefore prevention measures should be prepared to limit this unhealthy proliferation. Some say that for every rat that is seen to be there are probably ten more and it is appropriate to mobilize to avoid a possible "invasion" and consequent difficult disinfestation interventions, adopting preventive measures such as avoiding leaving food easily available to rats.

Varicella virus reactivation and cardiovascular events

In the event that the varicella-zoster virus reactivates (also called St. Anthony's fire in jargon) not only can painful events and various complications occur but also increase the risk of rare cardiovascular problems, so it would be necessary to take preventive measures especially in patients suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular system. There is talk of a clear increase in the risk of myocardial infarction up to cardiac arrest in patients where the annoying shingles with previous cardiovascular problems occurs. With the average increase in the age of the world population, the incidence of herpes-zoster cases is expected to increase, then as age advances immunocompromised conditions are more frequent and therefore this can cause the varicella-zoster virus that has remained silent to re-emerge.

Emergency in California for H5N1 avian flu

After the severe case of avian influenza, Louisiana (linkable with partial genetic examination to wild birds and farmed poultry) California declared a state of health emergency for avian influenza H5N1 for the spread of cases in farms, but health authorities would have stated that the risk for humans remains low and cases of person-to-person infections have not been documented. To prevent cases of H5 avian influenza, it is necessary to reduce exposure to saliva, mucus and feces of animals as much as possible. To report by changing the subject but remaining on healthy issues that the health authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have declared that the mysterious disease (one hundred and forty-three victims in November) circulating in the south-west of the province of Kwango is actually a severe form of malaria, but some say that further investigations should be carried out on cases.

Expansion of Dengue-affected territories in Vietnam

Vietnamese health authorities warn that the territories where Dengue is endemic continue to expand, then this fever would be becoming increasingly dangerous and unpredictable even if the death toll lately is lower when compared to last year. In the past the Mekong Delta and the central coast were particularly affected by Dengue fever, but it is spreading to areas in the southeast, north-central and in regions of the central highlands; so even in places to the north such as Hanoi and other mountainous provinces cases are beginning to be recorded. To be noted changing the subject but remaining on health issues the investigations into a virus (defined as mysterious, perhaps respiratory) that is causing dozens of victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo, apparently affecting mainly very young individuals in very poor areas of the country.
