Floods in Texas and fires in Canada

There are reportedly two victims in Texas Hill Country in an area that was already hit by severe flooding last year, with over two hundred people rescued by officials using boats and helicopters; authorities also warn that more heavy rainfall is expected so the danger isn't over. Unlike last year more information was provided about the rapid rise of the Guadalupe River advising residents to move to higher ground. As for Canada thousands of people have had to leave their homes in northwest Ontario due to fast-spreading wildfires, particularly affecting the Collins First Nation community with homes and buildings destroyed, there are significant issues overall due to poor air quality from smoke traveling long distances, and visibility is also low.

Bad weather in some Italy regions with damage and disruptions

Strong thunderstorms have hit some regions due to high temperatures and the resulting energy accumulated in the atmosphere from an African heatwave that is still affecting the whole country (with peaks well above forty degrees in Sardinia). There is talk of one victim in Emilia Romagna region due to weather-related causes and disruptions for the population, as well as damage like roofs being blown off, overturned cars and uprooted trees. To report switching topics but staying on environmental issues there is concern about the storage conditions of thousands of barrels containing radioactive waste in the northeastern Atlantic from European countries, about six hundred kilometers east of the French coast at a depth of over four thousand meters on the seabed and cemented; indeed, limited traces of radioactivity have been detected that require monitoring.

Testing an antiviral against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola

A first clinical trial of an antiviral to prevent the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reportedly been announced by international health organizations. Reports mention a death toll rising to seven hundred people with nearly two thousand infected; however, the outbreak could be four times larger than the official numbers and there's concern that infections could spread under the radar. Ninety percent of Ebola cases have been recorded in the mineral-rich Ituri province in the northeast of the country, where the first deaths occurred in mid-May, then some highlight the lack of resources to handle the outbreak and cases outside the traced contact list with unclear transmission chains and people dying without reaching a healthcare facility.

Deforestation in the Amazon is decreasing

According to data provided by Brazilian authorities on deforestation in the Amazon, it appears that the lowest level in a decade has been reached, about thirty-eight percent less than last year when comparing satellite views, with proposals to commit to eradicating illegal deforestation by 2030; but this doesn't mean the situation is very reassuring right now, since from January to June trees have been cut down to make way for agricultural practices in an area (almost thirteen hundred square kilometers) nearly twice the size of New York. The rainforest stores large amounts of carbon and plays a role in regulating the climate; for example, when talking about the decrease in deforestation, the Cerrado is also mentioned, a savannah in the southern Amazon rich in healthy biodiversity.

Wildfires in France and Italy

A fire in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris (sixty kilometers southeast) burned about eight hundred hectares of vegetation, the flames spread unusually fast, helped by high temperatures during yet another heatwave in the country; then there were also traffic problems with a partial closure of a very busy highway during the summer holidays. About fifteen houses were evacuated in the village of Vaudoue with firefighters working to prevent the fire from reaching other settlements. In Italy seven to eight hundred hectares of vegetation burned in Piedmont, and in Ossola there was serious damage to biodiversity in Val Grande Park with two hundred hectares of forest destroyed. To report changing the subject but still on environmental issues that recently in eastern China authorities evacuated nearly two million people and suspended transport for a typhoon, then without casualties.

A tropical storm lashes southern China

There are said to be thirty-nine victims, nine missing and many evacuations due to flooding in Guangxi in southern China caused by a tropical storm, most of the victims are due to a dam cracking in the city of Nanning; then another storm is approaching, which will affect the area north of Taiwan (islands home to twenty-three million people) and the east coast of China. During floods in China as often happens in these circumstances rescuers had to use inflatable boats to help people in trouble, and there are reports of people being swept away by water on streets almost turned into rivers. To report on a different note, but still on natural events yet another heatwave is expected for Italy with temperature peaks around forty degrees Celsius for example in Sardinia and parts of Sicily.

Forest fire in Andalusia in Spain

At least twelve people are reported dead, nineteen missing and over one thousand people displaced due to a forest fire near Los Gallardos in a municipality of Almeria, it is the most serious fire in a decade in Andalusia in terms of human casualties; there are reports of people trapped in their cars as the rapidly advancing flames surrounded them and smoke has hampered traffic on many roads even causing congestion on a highway. The fall of a power line seems to be the triggering cause of the fire, at least according to initial investigations, then the rather dry vegetation helped the flames spread quickly. To report on a related note but staying with natural events a cloudburst in India caused a pile of accumulated waste which had formed almost like a small hill to collapse in the city of Pimpri Chinchvad resulting in at least three deaths and some missing people.

Architectures designed to mitigate heat waves

To cope with increasingly frequent and prolonged heat waves it will be necessary to design houses, apartment buildings and entire neighborhoods with architectural criteria that can help keep temperatures down; in France in Montpellier apartments without air conditioning with white façades featuring numerous Middle Eastern-style curves almost always managed not to exceed twenty-five degrees Celsius. Not as successful in Bordeaux apparently is the design of houses in a new neighborhood that turned into ovens during the forty-degree heat wave. Generally in many cities there aren't enough green spaces and buildings too close together tend to trap heat; so ventilation should be encouraged in addition to using natural and eco-friendly insulating materials in construction.

Summer affective disorder caused by climate change

Usually the affective disorder with disorders in the hygiene of sleep, appetite, in social relationships occur in some people predominantly in winter, but according to the researchers with climate change these disorders can also happen in summer acting on circadian rhythms (regulatory cycles based on light, position of the Sun and Moon, on biological variables .. with reference sinusoid characteristics). In general in winter more sleep is tended to be asleep, to exceed with nutrition, to have less contact, while insomnia, reduced appetite, anxiety, irritability and agitation prevail in summer; in fact, mood disregulation can lead to sleep disturbances and affect the release of hormones, then in particular extreme heat would be responsible for mood and mental crises. Situations however often manageable with training techniques aimed at treating the individual disorder.

Fires in France, Spain, Portugal and Greece

A new heat wave is affecting Spain with temperature peaks of forty-three degrees Celsius reached in Andalusia and Extremadura and is moving towards France favoring the fires also given the condition of dry climate; there is talk of a fire in the south of the country (Pyrenees-Orientales on the borders of Spain) to the detriment of vegetation with about ten thousand people evacuated, then there were problems for the proper conduct of a well-known cycling race. European authorities have sent firefighting aircraft from Cyprus and Sweden to put out the flames in coordination with the French firefighters of Perpignan engaged in difficult conditions also because of the wind that fuels the fires and there were five injured. High attention in much of Portugal for fire risk and not much better the situation in Greece struggling with dozens of fires.

Better face the emergency in Venezuela

After the complaints of the population for the disorganization in distributing the aid and setting up the shelters the Venezuelan authorities would be intent on better dealing with the emergency caused by the earthquake with special staff, in the meantime the death toll has increased to over three thousand three hundred people with sixteen thousand injured and seventeen thousand homeless. Some speak of the distrust of the earthquake victims to see a future in a country already for some time in the grip of economic crises and poor management of resources and which now also finds itself with this epochal disaster. There was no lack of gestures of solidarity of the rescuers engaged in extracting from the rubble of the survivors risking their lives as happened for example in the port city of La Guaira that is located north of the capital Caracas particularly affected by the devastation caused by the earthquake.

Heatwave in the east coast of the United States

An oppressive heat hood is affecting many states on the east coast of the United States and in part of Canada with temperature peaks even above forty degrees Celsius, there is talk of event cancellations and apparently also problems for the parade that celebrates the two and a half centuries since the U.S. declaration of independence; then in New York the authorities had invited citizens to moderate the use of air conditioners that are putting a strain on the tightness of the power grid. In prolonged heatwaves the number of related victims could also be higher than for hurricanes and floods with prevalence for vulnerable and elderly people. A heat stroke can be very dangerous even for a young person and if feel nausea, discomfort and confusion, intense thirst with a sense of fatigue, then dark urine and red skin drinking water and electrolytes resting in a cool room.

Fires in southern France after heatwave

After a week of record temperatures and rather dry weather of the fires have affected areas of France, there are about three thousand people evacuated, then teams of firefighters engaged in facing with difficulty the flames supported by the wind; particularly affected the area of Mailhac in the region south of the Tarn and also a large area of the Aude on the borders of Spain; international organizations had warned last week of the danger of fires in Europe for the vegetation made drier due to the heatwave. To report changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues the record temperatures monitored in the oceans in June, almost twenty-one degrees Celsius on average and therefore exceeding the records reached in 2023 and 2024, then the situation will probably remain overheated due to the effect of the global current "El Nino" that adds to the greenhouse effect.

Organization with shortages for the earthquake in Venezuela

The Venezuelan population affected by the earthquake judged to be among the most disastrous in Latin American history complains of disorganization in the distribution of basic necessities for example in Caracas to the point of suffering from hunger, then missing shelters and rescue points for basic needs while the death toll is more than two thousand people (some say almost three thousand) with eleven thousand injured and tens of thousands missing. Rescuers were mobilized by many countries and remarkable the news of a three-year-old boy extracted alive from the rubble after six days [also a man after eight]. Better fans than air conditioners

An air conditioner is an expensive device that consumes a lot of energy (often obtained from fossil sources that cause the greenhouse effect) that in practice extracts the hot air from a room and transfers it to the atmosphere and in the vicinity of the heat exchanger, then bacteria and fungi can form in the ducts crossed by the refrigerant gases and it takes a constant cleaning to avoid any pathologies. A fan consumes little weighing little on the energy networks put to the test especially in the case of prolonged heat waves are, then if refresh the skin with a little water or a nebulizer the feeling of coolness increases, according to some the important thing is that the air of the room is not too hot with the risk that the body can not dispose of heat effectively, in figurative terms ventilated oven effect.

Temperatures in some European countries influenced by the Arctic

Northern European regions are closer to the Arctic which is the part of the planet warming the fastest, with temperatures rising four times faster than the global average, this creates a somewhat unhealthy heating loop that tends to feed itself, at least according to some experts who point out that if Arctic ice melts it reflects less sunlight and the darker sea absorbs this energy speeding up the warming in a cycle that dangerously repeats affecting the whole ecosystem. Satellite analyses would show how the northern countries have been hit harder by the heatwave because of this phenomenon, which has created a kind of heat dome that has pushed atmospheric circulation further north.

Rescuers dig through rubble in Venezuela looking for survivors

Rescue workers continue to pull people alive from the rubble in Venezuela after the strong double earthquake hit a country already in economic crisis. Reports say the death toll has risen to over fourteen hundred people and is still increasing amid controversies among the population, frustrated due to the lack of machinery for digging and equipment to locate buried bodies, forced to use improvised tools (experts usually say the first seventy-two hours are the most crucial for saving lives). To report on a different note but still on natural issues that international organizations report that there would have been thirteen hundred additional deaths in Europe due to the heat, France appears to be among the countries most affected by the African heatwave. In Germany a record of over forty-one degrees Celsius was reached near the city of Saarbruecken close the French border.

A heat wave is moving towards Germany

Temperatures above forty degrees Celsius are expected in Berlin and across large parts of Germany, and already talking about cracks opening up in the roads due to the slow movement of the African-origin heat wave that's driving record temperatures across Europe. In France it even happened that in Paris authorities asked supermarket chains for ice to give to firefighters to bring to emergency points and hospitals because of the increased demand for help for people suffering from heat strokes, then in the country had to shut down two nuclear power plants causing problems in managing the situation along with issues in schools, transport, and tourism. In general there's been an increase in workplace accidents along with complaints about the horrible working conditions due to the scorching heat.

Venezuela in trouble after the strong earthquake

The death toll would have risen to over nine hundred with at least three thousand three hundred injured after the strong double quake with aftershocks and a seismic swarm that hit Venezuela, then estimates regarding missing people also speak of tens of thousands of cases (perhaps fifty thousand) and for the authorities the situation is disastrous while rescuers are pulling many people alive from the rubble of numerous collapsed buildings. To report on a different note but still on natural issues that researchers warn that a heatwave like the one currently hitting Europe would have been practically impossible fifty years ago and it's estimated that back then a similar extreme phenomenon would have been less intense by three and a half degrees Celsius, there are reports of two hundred victims in Spain due to causes related to the scorching heat.

Shifting the focus to another aquatic environment dozens of victims in Europe (for example over forty in France and five in Germany) due to people swimming in rivers to cool off given the scorching temperatures caused by an African-type anticyclone that persists and moves very slowly, the high pressure traps hot air for several days which tends to remain in place creating a type of extreme phenomenon that is becoming increasingly frequent.

Very hot weather in France with half the country under red alert

It could be a record-breaking summer in terms of heat in France and now the weather forecasts are predicting peaks of forty-three degrees Celsius in the city of Bordeaux in the southwest and thirty-nine in Paris with people complaining about the heatwave and the inevitable inconveniences. Of the fifty-one heatwaves recorded since 1947, two-thirds have occurred since 2000 with about half of those in the last ten years highlighting just how pronounced the ongoing climate warming is mainly caused by the (reckless) consumption of fossil fuels; there are also reports of two victims in Carpentras in the south of the country, two children found dead in a car in scorching temperatures. France dealing with the African high-pressure system

Due to the influence of an African high-pressure system over much of Europe, temperatures are rising well above the average for this time of year. In France, they’re talking about the second heatwave in a month, and the weather forecasts are predicting temperatures of forty degrees Celsius or even higher tomorrow in several towns, causing inevitable discomfort for the population and the cancellation of some events, then the output of three nuclear power plants will be reduced because of the high temperatures in the Rhone and Garonne rivers whose waters are used to cool the reactors. In Italy the situation isn’t much better with various heat warnings in major cities, then very low levels in the Po river also about eight meters below normal and low snow reserves on average in the mountains compared to previous years.

Don't dismantle the ocean monitoring network

After a fire fungi restore the soil

Certain fungi are able to feed on the toxins left in the soil after a fire, making it ready for new plant growth, at least according to a Canadian study that highlights their importance especially with climate change and consequently large fires of these fungi come in colors like orange, purple and brown that are fire-loving (pyrophilous) able just weeks after a fire to turn ash-like soil into favorable environmental conditions. Fungal spores seem to stay dormant until activated by a fire that raises soil temperatures very high, but just a few centimeters below the surface the temperature drops significantly allowing them to act. Gaining a better understanding of these fungi could be useful in keeping ecosystems healthy.

Ban on social media for kids in the UK

British authorities have imposed a total ban on social media use for under-sixteen-year-olds starting next spring, arguing for instance that it makes kids unhappy, makes them targets for ill-intentioned people and can even harm their mental health. Increase in confirmed Ebola cases in Congo

There are reported to be seven hundred and eighty-two confirmed cases of Ebola in Congo, with one hundred and eighty-one deaths due to the rare Bundibugyo strain, at least according to Congolese health authorities who also state that the number of cases could be higher because the virus probably was spreading unnoticed for weeks before the Ebola outbreak was confirmed in mid-May in the eastern province of Ituri (where ninety percent of the total cases are recorded), then they also mention a fifty-six percent coverage for monitored contacts; fifty-six people are hospitalized with a typical death rate of twenty-three percent. Discussions on a temporarily resolved Alzheimer's case

After living with advanced Alzheimer’s for about ten years resulting in memory loss, speech and movement difficulties, no bladder control, an eighty-year-old woman temporarily recovered after a high dose of psilocybin (about nineteen hours after administration) a natural substance found in certain types of mushrooms. In the following days her vital functions apparently improved, she was able to walk better, dress herself, smile and look family members in the eyes recognizing them, with remarkable improvement in bladder control since she had suffered from incontinence for years. Adapting to face extreme weather events

May temperature data in Europe show how we quickly went from a period that was quite cold compared to the average to an intense heat wave caused by an African high-pressure system, so according to researchers this demonstrates how fast extreme events are becoming the new normal rather than rare exceptions. This has a significant environmental impact leaving little time for people, crops, and ecosystems to adapt to much higher temperatures, with peaks of thirty-five to forty degrees across large areas of Europe and even sea temperatures were practically at record levels. Since with the influence of the global "El Nino" current it's likely that significant extreme events will occur between June and August some recommend preparing to face them properly.

Mangroves are expanding again after decades of retreat

Mangrove forests in coastal areas of the planet allow the survival of millions of people by countering climate change promoting a healthy ecosystem and enabling various activities ranging from fishing to tourism and satellite images would show that after decades of decline due to human development and extreme events they are expanding thanks to safeguarding and conservation initiatives, but in practice it seems that this surprising result is more due to the ability of mangrove forests to withstand human impacts than to the efforts made to protect them. Among the important functions performed by mangroves is the protection of coasts from erosion and storms so deforestation must be stopped because they remain vulnerable, then having young mangrove forests is not the same environmentally as the role carried out by the original ones.

E-cigarettes are unhealthy for young people's lungs

In a test conducted on twenty year olds who had smoked e-cigarettes for three years (and not traditional cigarettes or other unhealthy types that young people sometimes smoke) it emerged that their lung and heart functions were not exactly healthy, at least according to a Canadian study which highlighted that even though the measured parameters were generally normal, many subjects showed a tendency to experience shortness of breath during exercises thus greater dyspnea. E-cigarettes were initially introduced to the market to help people quit smoking, but they have become a kind of trend among young people and this is concerning because the lungs do not fully develop until around twenty-five years of age. Exposure to toxins at a young age impairs proper lung development and predisposes to lung diseases.

Slowing down the development of artificial intelligence

Increasingly advanced computer models of neural networks supported by generative artificial intelligence are showing signs that it could be difficult for humans to keep them under control, at least according to statements from the developer of a well-known AI chatbot based on a computing platform in San Francisco U.S., who claims that it is useful to slow down or pause the global race in developing technological AI structures (mainly present in the U.S. and China). It seems that a global coordination mechanism is necessary in order to make difficult decisions regarding development within a framework of international competition and geopolitical pressures. The development of generative artificial intelligence is already supported by the same "thinking" artificial intelligence, so it seems clear that it is dangerously getting out of hand.

Increasingly powerful data centers under construction

In many areas of the world data centers are under construction to support generative artificial intelligence applications of much higher power or scale than that of the normal data centers used until now, they are very large structures, full of cables and connections that require large amounts of energy and water to cool the boards on which the chips that support powerful neural networks are mounted; therefore complaints about noise and the impact on the territory are not lacking, then these soil-consuming structures also cause heat islands that influence the climate at a distance due to the heat released by the computers' heat exchangers. Some complain that areas where energy is cheaper and can be generated from renewable sources are often becoming the least suitable for locating these large data centers.

Delos island is sinking by one centimeter per year

Due to the rise in sea level and geological processes resulting in subsidence of coastal areas Delos would sink by one centimeter per year, then there are two more or less positive scenarios of prediction regarding the trend of this phenomenon, at least according to a study that highlights how the coastline in front of the ancient city of Delos is increasingly retreating, the wetland behind the harbor will expand, archaeological areas with ancient structures that are partially submerged will become completely submerged, so visitors will also have difficulties regarding accessibility. To report changing the topic but staying on natural issues the count of the damage caused by a tornado in Rome that uprooted dozens of trees, damaged roofs, cars, tore down structures, obstructed road and rail traffic; then there was a victim in Sicily due to fires.

Bad weather in some regions of Northern Italy

After a period marked by unusually high temperatures for the season the energy accumulated in the atmosphere has been released to the ground with heavy rainfall, storms, hailstorms, and even tornadoes; in Piedmont there are reports of a school roof being torn off and hailstones up to five to six centimeters in diameter, then in Lombardy a kindergarten was damaged, in Veneto falling trees and road signs as well as flooding occurred with localized cases generally affecting all regions of the North and in Liguria, the weather alert remains. To report changing the subject but staying on naturalistic themes the concern of Norwegian environmentalists about the increase in tourists visiting the Lofoten which are located north of the Arctic Circle and attract over a million tourists a year with an impact on a fragile environment visible from satellite.

Staying in shape to prevent Alzheimer's

Adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and adequate physical activity to promote cardiovascular health could be useful in preventing Alzheimer's disease, which slowly deprives the affected person not only of memory and the ability to carry out daily activities but also often forces family members to take full-time care of the patient. Some say that one in eight people over the age of sixty-five could be forced to live with Alzheimer's, a kind of pandemic, also due to the increased longevity in the population. Staying active through social activities, learning to play a musical instrument, practicing meditation daily, exercising the mind with reading and continuing to stay informed could help reduce the incidence of the disease.

Protecting the health of trees and preventing fires

Climate change characterized by periods of low rainfall followed by others with heavy rain and even thunderstorms, undermines the health of plants due to diseases and pests, then these withered plants can promote the spread of fires; some say that there are areas of the world where fires destroy trees at a faster rate than that required to replace them. Once the sapling of a new tree is planted it finds itself in an ecosystem substantially different from the previous one, so species that can adapt and are also resistant to various diseases should be chosen, then the health of the humus plays an important role in promoting rapid growth, for example to regenerate a forest; otherwise there is a risk of having trees that grow with difficulty and dry out leading to a vicious cycle concerning fires.

Global warming in the next five years

Due to the greenhouse effect it is expected that temperatures in the Arctic will increase more than in other regions of the planet resulting in a rise in sea levels, affecting global currents that influence climate systems and causing severe extreme events especially in northern areas of the world. In general over the next five years global warming could reach temperatures of almost two degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period, the window for action on global temperatures is closing rapidly, but this does not mean that it is impossible to intervene even if the one-and-a-half-degree increase limit established in the Paris climate agreements is exceeded. It seems that there will be a strong "El Nino" from this winter which may persist into next year, generally it lasts from nine to twelve months and tends to increase temperatures.

Pigeons may orient themselves using the liver

From studies carried out in the past it was generally thought that birds oriented themselves by looking for a kind of magnetic trace through light-sensitive molecules in their eyes or located in the beak or inner ear, but now German researchers may have found an organ unexpectedly as the liver. Specialized immune cells near the nerve fibers of pigeons' livers break down red blood cells by accumulating iron. Apparently if birds are temporarily deprived of these cells they can no longer orient themselves in flight; therefore the iron in the liver may help find direction like a magnetic compass in addition to using the Sun as a navigation guide transmitting signals to the brain. Researchers are looking for these functions in other animals although other hypotheses and parameters such as distance and specific destination also need to be considered.

Closure of Uganda borders with Congo due to Ebola risk

The suspected cases of a rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in Congo are almost a thousand, with at least two hundred and twenty suspected deaths, and the Ugandan authorities have decided to close the borders since the number of people exposed to the virus has increased, however apparently this decision is not in accordance with the guidelines of international health agencies. Crossing the border will be allowed only in emergencies including in response to potential virus outbreaks, and authorized people will have to undergo twenty-one days of quarantine. Therefore, the strategy is to trace and isolate Ebola contacts. Some say that perhaps time was lost allowing the virus to spread unnoticed also due to a lack of funds, additionally conflicts in the area make everything more difficult; in the Democratic Republic of Congo there is talk of unpreparedness rather than protection against this type of outbreak.

Record average temperatures in Spain and France

Due to an African high-pressure system of subtropical type there is mention temperatures are well above the seasonal average with various records for the month of May during the heatwave, for example, in Spain peaks can reach nearly thirty-eight degrees Celsius, and in France thirty-six (seven victims due to the heat); then intense heat also in England with a kind of heat dome over London and the situation is not very different in Italy for several cities in the North. Shifting attention to India the heatwave affecting central and north-western areas has not yet abated in a grip of "brutal" heat and heat islands with temperatures reaching up to forty-seven degrees Celsius, there are reports of many victims from heatstroke, mostly males; while authorities warn to be cautious while working under the sun and to stay hydrated.

List of countries at risk of potential Ebola outbreaks

African health authorities have provided a list of countries at risk for potential Ebola virus outbreaks: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia; then there is mention of high mobility of people and insecurity as possible causes of the spread of the disease. Three new cases have been confirmed in Uganda bringing the total to five in the country, while in the Democratic Republic of the Congo more than nine hundred suspected cases are being monitored. To report changing the subject completely but remaining on health topics that some argue that social media, screen time and chatbots supported by artificial intelligence would be more harmful to health and general well-being than smoking, alcohol, injuries, and a sedentary lifestyle for children and teenagers; therefore appropriate bans are proposed.

Exclusion zone in southern California area due to toxic leak

A large exclusion zone has been established in Orange County in the southeastern part of Los Angeles in California (not far from Disneyland, that remains open) due to a toxic methacrylate leak from a cracked tank containing twenty-six thousand liters of the chemical compound capable of irritating the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, as well as causing respiratory and neurological reactions; there is talk of declaring a state of emergency and evacuating about forty thousand residents; barriers are being placed to prevent the chemical compound from reaching sewer drains and channels potentially spilling into the ocean. To report on a different topic but still related to natural phenomena a heat wave is affecting some European countries; for example, in Italy temperatures of thirty-six degrees are expected in Bolzano and much higher than normal temperatures in several northern cities, with abnormal heat also in parts of France.

Regional risk raised for the Ebola outbreak in Congo

There are reportedly almost seven hundred and fifty suspected cases of infection and one hundred and seventy-seven suspected deaths in Congo due to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. International organizations have raised the risk for this outbreak to "very high" from "high" (low at a global level) due to the latest reported cases of infection, then the absence of a vaccine or specific therapies for the virus, conflicts and violence in the area and the high mobility of the population. The authorities in Congo have banned funerals in the province most affected by the infections and established that specialized personnel take care of the bodies; some say that tents intended for the care of the sick have been burned. To report on a different topic but still related to health issues that in Southern California forty thousand people have been evacuated due to a methyl methacrylate chemical leak, and the situation is being monitored.

Sleep as if it were an organized biological state

Sleeping might not just be a period of rest, quiet and inactive recovery for the body but rather a kind of highly organized biological state that coordinates brain chemistry, influencing blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid in a way that promotes the brain's cleaning process during the night with a coordinated rhythm oscillating in sync; at least according to a study which suggests that sleep quality could be a factor linked to a higher risk of dementia. Factors that influence sleep quality include chronic stress, depression, cardiovascular diseases, fragmented sleep, fluctuations in heartbeats, aging and cognitive decline; neuromodulators (norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine) would play an important role by regulating mood, attention, learning and behavior while awake.

Estimates on the duration of Ebola outbreak in Congo

The Ebola virus has probably been spreading unnoticed for weeks and now there are about six hundred suspected cases and at least one hundred thirty-nine suspected deaths from the Bundibugyo strain, which is rare and currently has no available treatments or vaccines; at least according to statements from international health organizations that estimate the outbreak in Congo will last at least two months. Some say that the contagion cases have been substantially underestimated; at first it was thought to be other diseases when in fact it was a strain of Ebola considered worrisome for various reasons requiring accurate testing in specialized laboratories and these specific health technical characteristics can hardly be adopted quickly with already present outbreaks. Ebola is a highly contagious virus and is transmitted through bodily fluids.

Floods in China and intense heat in India

There are reportedly more than ten victims due to floods in vast areas of central and southern China affected by torrential rainfall, is talk of flooded cities and thousands of evacuations; particularly hit by heavy rains and consequent floods is Xuan - Enshi County in Hubei Province in central China. As for India, apparently a weather station in Uttar Pradesh Banda recorded a temperature above forty-seven degrees Celsius with conditions described as brutal further south as well in areas such as Vidarbha and Maharashtra, and then the minimum temperatures are truly high, so there is no relief even at night in many places, for example the capital Delhi where scorching heat islands form. In the last days of April the fifty hottest cities in the world were unusually all in India.

Earthquake in southern China

There would be two victims, one missing person and over seven thousand people evacuated from the city of Liuzhou due to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake with a depth of about eight kilometers that shook the Guangxi region in southern China, is talk of at least thirteen buildings collapsed with heavy machinery clearing debris; then landslides caused by the earthquake have made it impossible to pass on various roads in the affected area and even railway services to Liuzhou have been canceled or delayed, rescuers are searching for several missing people. To report on a different note but still on natural topics abnormally high temperatures for the season recorded in areas of Canada, particularly in Toronto with a heat alert and advice to protect health in case of signs of discomfort and to stop activities and drink (hydrating in advance even if not thirsty); rather high temperatures also in New York in U.S.

Declared emergency for Ebola epidemic in Congo and Uganda

It would be an emergency with potential risk for neighboring countries regarding the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with eighty-eight victims and over three hundred suspected cases according to international health organizations, although borders should not be closed since it does not meet contagion criteria comparable to a pandemic like Covid (the aim is to activate controls for a health event considered serious and it requires coordinated interventions and an international response). A case has been confirmed in the Congolese capital Kinshasa about a thousand kilometers from the epicenter of the first outbreak in Ituri province and a possible further spread is hypothesized; then there is mention of a suspected case in North Kivu province one of the most populous in Congo and near Ituri. Vaccines are not available for this new Ebola outbreak.

Ebola cases in Congo and Uganda

Researchers are trying to understand through genetic sequencing how the Ebola outbreak in Congo's Ituri province may have occurred causing sixty-five deaths and two hundred forty-six suspected cases, while in Uganda there is talk of one victim with infections apparently coming from Congo. African health authorities from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, South Sudan and international partners are working to increase border controls in order to address the situation for a virus like Ebola considered highly contagious and often fatal despite the treatments and vaccines that have been developed in recent years. Since the first case identified in 1976 in Zaire now the Democratic Republic of Congo at least fifteen thousand people have died in Africa, the virus (or group of viruses) is transmitted through bodily fluids, with main symptoms such as fever, bleeding and diarrhea.

Sandstorm in India and bad weather in Italy

There are reportedly dozens of victims in India in Uttar Pradesh in the north of the country due to a strong sand and dust storm that caused structures to collapse, uprooted trees and brought down many power lines resulting in electricity outages. As for Italy heavy hailstorms in the northern part of the country damaged crops including some vineyards in the well-known wine area of Franciacorta in the province of Brescia in Lombardy region, there are also reports of a tornado in Veneto region in the province of Rovigo in addition to various hailstorms; in general the drop in temperatures is significant. To report changing the subject but staying on natural issues that the damage caused by fires monitored from January to April affected about one hundred and fifty million hectares (favored by weather conditions related to "El Nino") with Asia and Africa being particularly affected.

The risk of large hantavirus outbreaks remains low

According to statements from international health organizations there are currently no signs that large hantavirus outbreaks may occur although the situation could change due to the virus's long incubation period and it is possible to monitor cases in the coming weeks. Some say that perhaps the issue is a sort of mental attitude because it recalls memories of events related to Covid, but experts argue that the hantavirus scenario is very different and no mutations can be seen from the analysis of genetic sequences that could suggest transmission similar to that occurring with coronaviruses, measles and influenza. Vigilance as always should remain high keeping healthcare systems in good working order since with climate change potential pandemics are possible.

Loss of biodiversity worsens human health

Human health, nutrition and overall well-being would be threatened by the decline of pollinating insects due to habitat loss and climate change (as well as pesticides and intensive agricultural practices); in fact, these insects are indispensable for the production of fruits, vegetables, and legumes that provide essential vitamins and minerals for a balanced diet, leading consequently to an increase in diseases and deaths. Researchers conducted a study monitoring ten villages and surrounding areas in Nepal for over a year, finding for example that pollinating insects contribute over twenty percent to the intake of vitamin A, folate and vitamin E. The relationship between pollinating insects and humans is fundamental if we want to protect the health of the ecosystem and humans, for which purposes it is useful to plant flowers, reduce pesticides and protect bees.
