Windstorm in Pakistan after heatwave

There would be at least fourteen victims and over a hundred injured due to a windstorm that swept across Pakistan, particularly affecting the provinces in eastern Punjab and northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and the capital Islamabad has also been impacted with uprooted trees and fallen power line poles. Reports speak of intense heat with temperatures exceeding forty-five degrees Celsius that would have favored the conditions for the formation of such a violent windstorm, while weather forecasts announce possible further storms. It is noteworthy that shifting attention to other scenarios a record heat has been reached in the United Arab Emirates for the month of May with temperatures exceeding fifty-one degrees Celsius and Egypt is facing a food and water crisis with difficulties in sustaining a population of one hundred and thirteen million inhabitants.

Records losses in areas covered by tropical forests

It is estimated that in 2024 trees equivalent to a figurative calculation of about eighteen football fields covered by tropical forests were lost every minute, obviously a huge area of six million seven hundred thousand hectares (about the size of Panama), with a record eighty percent higher than in 2023. The country at the top of this unhealthy ranking of forest loss is Brazil, a country that will host the next environmental change conference in November, facing problems dealing with fires in the Amazon affected by the worst drought ever recorded in the rainforest. A naturally humid ecosystem hardly burns and for the first time apparently fires are the leading cause of tropical forest loss; therefore it is necessary to plan interventions differently to adapt to the new environmental reality.

A kind of avalanche of water in southeastern France

At least three victims would be due to the storm that affected the southeast of France, reports from the affected areas describe a scene of significant destruction with vehicles swept away by rivers of water, mud, and debris. Over five hundred passengers of a high-speed train were forced in the middle of the night to exit the carriages. Some spoke of a kind of water avalanche caused by a violent and incomprehensible phenomenon that was self-sustaining, leading to interruptions in the supply of electricity, drinking water, and stalled sewage treatment facilities. Among the most affected locations are Vidauban and Tonneins, and to assist those in difficulty dozens of rescuers and volunteers have intervened; many houses have been flooded; rail traffic will remain suspended for several days between Agen and Marmande (with repercussions on Bordeaux and Toulouse) in the southwest of the country.

A storm lashes areas of the Midwest and South U.S.

There are at least twenty-seven reported fatalities, most in Kentucky and particularly in Laurel County, due to a storm characterized by tornadoes that have destroyed homes and overturned vehicles, leaving a trail of destruction and debris; there are also reports of ten people hospitalized in serious condition. Parts of about twenty roads have been closed, and it may take days before some of them can be reopened, and there are fears that the death toll may rise, with hundreds of homes damaged (significant damage also in Missouri). Changing the subject but still on environmental issues there are concerns about environmental pollution and land exploitation in Guyana due to the discovery of hydrocarbon deposits that could make this country the so-called "Dubai of the Caribbean", considering that eighty-five percent of the territory is covered by rainforest.

Floods in Maryland in the United States

Due to intense rainfall and downpours the roads in western Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania have turned into rivers and Maryland authorities have declared a state of emergency in response to what are considered historic floods. There is talk of one victim (a boy in Virginia) and dozens of people forced to leave their flood-affected homes, then two schools were evacuated with rescue teams intervening to help the students; the counties of Allegany and Garrett in Maryland were particularly hard hit by the flooding. Shifting attention to Italy to report that there has been a wave of bad weather affecting Sicily, characterized by heavy rains and strong winds in some areas of the region, making travel difficult at times due to flooded roads and complicating connections with the islands due to rough seas, along with discomfort for the local population.

Protecting the Saya de Malha Bank in Indian Ocean

A little-known underwater territory of forty thousand square kilometers located between Mauritius and Seychelles, like the Saya de Malha Bank in the Indian Ocean (an area comparable in size to Switzerland), would be a rare and precious ecosystem in international waters that needs protection because it is at risk of intensive exploitation by the fishing industry. This is considering that it is a lung of the ocean rich in seagrass beds and habitat for numerous marine species capable of capturing carbon dioxide thirty-five times faster than tropical forests. Moreover researchers claim that boats arriving in these very fishy waters even from distant countries not only fish for tuna but also catch sharks for their fins leading to their extinction. In 2012 international organizations deemed the Saya de Malha Bank a potential candidate for World Marine Heritage.

A tax to contain the global warming

To try to limit the global warming, it would be necessary to establish a progressive tax on wealth and investments very much oriented towards the intensive exploitation of coal, at least according to a study that underlines how the responsibility for global warming in about thirty years is due to the richest ten percent of the richest people on the planet, mainly rich Chinese and Americans who if combined, account for almost half of global emissions. Particular attention should be paid to how much financial investments affect the climate issue rather than dwelling only on lifestyles and personal consumption. The group of so-called responsible could also be further reduced; in fact, it seems that almost a third of the "super-ultra" rich are in the United States, more than China, India and Germany combined.

Floods in Petra in Jordan

The well-known tourist resort of Petra was suddenly flooded by a cloudburst, there is talk of at least one victim (a Belgian tourist) and about eighteen hundred people evacuated by the Jordanian authorities who organized rescues; tourists visiting the monumental attractions carved into the rock have often been forced to find, not without difficulty and inconvenience, a refuge from the torrents of water that have invaded the characteristic gorges of the place. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues that a study carried out in Canada would have highlighted how public notices regarding the progress of the fire season could avoid trips to hospital for asthma patients, in practice it is information relating to air quality, to take the appropriate medicines, to equip oneself with air purifiers up to high-flow oxygen dispensers.

Truly destructive fire in Israel

It is considered by some to be one of the most destructive fires in the history of Israel, the one that has been devouring the woods near Mesilat Zion and not far from Jerusalem for a few days, favored by high temperatures, wind and drought; there is talk of mass evacuations, problems with traffic management, injuries due to intoxication and international mobilization. The authorities say that most of the fires are under control, but the extinguished and still smoking fires could regain strength and other firefighter interventions are not ruled out while the causes are investigated. The Eshkol forest and the hills west of the capital Jerusalem were particularly affected with residential areas affected by the columns of smoke that emanated from the high fires; the question is generally how the region will be able to cope with heat waves and extreme droughts linked to climate change.

Ecotourism and low environmental impact navigation

Accelerating action to protect the oceans is the goal of a conference to be held in Busan, South Korea, which aims to increase the resources to be allocated to safeguard thirty percent of the seas by 2030, also in preparation for the COP30 scheduled for November to be held in Brazil in order to integrate solutions designed for the oceans with other ecological actions. Some talk about how to encourage ecotourism, renewable energy, sustainable development and low environmental impact shipping to achieve good economic potential. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues that Turkish seismologists affirm the uncertainty regarding the monitored data relating to a recent earthquake of magnitude 6.2 in the region of Istanbul and the Sea of Marmara, which could perhaps be the precursors of a future stronger earthquake.
