Biodiversity loss often hidden

At a recent conference in Rome that allocated funds to stop the increasing unstoppable destruction of nature it was also discussed how biodiversity loss is often hidden and ignored, and the real costs of this destruction largely due to farmers who want to exploit the land for intensive cultivation are difficult to quantify. The agreement reached by many countries (but the United States did not participate in the conference) to finance initiatives aimed at protecting nature is in the opinion of some crucial to succeeding in protecting thirty percent of the land and seas, a goal that had previously been outlined without being able to reach full agreement; then it will be necessary to monitor the progress made by the countries that will use the funds allocated to protect biodiversity.

Warning for avalanches and icy roads in Japan

Snowfall of unusual intensity in several cities in Japan has caused inconvenience and accidents, the authorities warn of the risk of avalanches, icy roads and that the pipes may freeze, particularly affected by snowfall according to forecasts the prefectures of Niigata, Ishikawa and Nagano, then maybe also in western regions such as in Hiroshima and Shimane prefectures. In the regions overlooking the Sea of Japan where a thick snow cover usually forms every year and there are many tourist facilities for the ski industry, but this time it seems that the heavy snowfall is causing problems. Shifting attention to Spain, the anomalous flowering of almond trees early (with bees foraging) while it is still winter with the danger of a possible drop in temperatures for the buds.

Prolonged seismic swarm at the Campi Flegrei

Many people spent the night sleeping in reception facilities, in equipped gyms and above all in the car due to the prolonged seismic swarm due to bradyseism with earthquakes that had reached magnitude 3.9, now there is talk of magnitude 2.0 tremors with falling cornices and plaster which, however, frighten the population so much that there is talk of a situation similar to that of over forty years ago with many inhabitants who decided to leave Pozzuoli to go to more stable locations. Experts say that in theory earthquakes of magnitude 5 could also occur since the volcanic caldera of the Campi Flegrei shows signs of activity. It should be noted, shifting attention to Etna, that the lava flow of rather spectacular magmatic material has slowly descended until it reached nineteen hundred meters on the slopes of the volcano.

Bad weather in Tuscany region in Italy with damage

A wave of bad weather characterized by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts has affected large areas of Tuscany region, in Maremma the cultivated fields are flooded with probable loss of crops; there is talk of people rescued in flooded houses in Tarquinia (Lazio region) due to the flooding of the Mignone river thanks to the intervention of a helicopter, then only amphibious vehicles were able to reach the houses in the flooded countryside. On the island of Elba, the damage after the flood in Portoferraio is being counted and attempts are being made to remove the mud from the houses before it solidifies. To report shifting the attention to Sicily the spectacular eruption of Etna with a strip of incandescent magma that descends from the slopes of the volcano without causing damage, experts warn those approaching the magma to keep their distance for any jets of incandescent material from the flow.

Poorly protected peatlands around the world

A large amount of carbon dioxide is stored in peatlands (six hundred billion tons of CO2) and they also constitute a very particular ecosystem, but it is estimated that only seventeen percent of the areas that host peatlands are protected and this according to experts is a big mistake because they are important globally. They are often drained or burned to obtain land that can be used for agricultural purposes and this means sacrificing land that for hundreds of years has stored organic material in these characteristic humid environments where many particular animals and plants find refuge. Changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues it should be noted that a cloudburst on the island of Elba in Italy flooded the streets in Portoferraio, is talk about people trapped in homes and cars; then schools closed, interventions by special rescue teams.

Few initiatives against global warming

The new targets that had been proposed to limit global warming have not been met by almost all countries, but emissions are expected to halve by the end of the decade and only ten countries out of two hundred have adopted green initiatives. No penalties of any kind have been provided for those who do not respect the limits or even facilitations, so it is clear that there is little momentum for the ecological sector, but if the damage caused by climate change is calculated perhaps it would have been better to intervene in time; then there are also models that simulate how much can be saved by investing in environmental protection, of how it is better to prevent than to try to intervene after increasingly unpredictable extreme weather events. Countries that have historically released large amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere should be more responsible.

Surprisingly heat record for January

It was thought that due to the effects of the global current "La Nina" temperatures should be cooler on average (in figurative terms it would act as a brake on overheating), but the record heat monitored in January has belied the forecasts so much so that some call the value 1.75 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels surprising and perhaps there could be additional factors that are pushing for unprecedented persistent global warming. Every fraction of a degree above one and a half degrees Celsius global could be the intensity and frequency of extreme phenomena, then there are consequences on crops, all a series of parameters that affect health. Having warmer oceans, as has been monitored for some time, means less ability to absorb large amounts of heat from the atmosphere mitigating global temperatures.

Severe tremors in Santorini Island

Over two hundred earthquakes one of which of magnitude 4.6 would have been recorded in the popular Greek tourist island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea, the authorities have warned to remain calm in addition to preparing tents and rescue teams but many people have gone to the port to leave the island and many have slept outdoors and the population is quite scared; questions also regarding the tourism sector on how the situation should be managed. It should be noted completely changing the subject that according to astronomical calculations an asteroid almost the size of a football field is theoretically on a collision course with the earth (we are talking about a percentage above one percent) even if there is time to prepare for a possible impact and using futuristic technologies try to divert its trajectory avoiding the event assessed as very dangerous.

Bad weather in Indonesia and snow in South Korea

Due to the intense rainfall that affected large areas in Central Java, there are twenty-seven victims of floods and landslides, then there were floods in East Jakarta and recently about six hundred and eighty families were reportedly evacuated due to flooding in the city and regency of Tangerang with unusable railway lines and difficulties for the main international airport serving Greater Jakarta. On the island of Flores in the port city of Labuan Bajo, a well-known tourist destination for the characteristic boats that are also used to travel to the island of Komodo (famous for its large reptiles), the authorities warn that boats will have to remain in port due to high waves and strong winds. Shifting attention to South Korea, an intense snowfall should be reported that caused difficulties in travel both by rail, bus and plane.

A storm lashes Ireland

Record wind gusts of over one hundred and eighty kilometers per hour have lashed Ireland caused by the storm called "Eowyn", we are talking about one victim and tens of thousands of homes left without electricity supply (the electricity grid in some places cannot be repaired quickly for safety reasons) as well as uprooted trees and inconvenience. Both in Ireland and Scotland the authorities had closed schools and cancelled flights as a precaution and shelters had been set up, strong winds with gusts also affected Great Britain with a risk of flooding. It should be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues that in Britain territory a huge iceberg detached from the Antarctic a few decades ago due to climate change is heading dangerously towards a remote uncontaminated island in the territory of South Georgia.
