Fires and strong winds in Greece

A large fire is burning vegetation in eastern Attica, with reports of one victim in Keratea, and houses burned in Palaia Fokaia, many fire brigades are trying to combat the flames and personnel are engaged in evacuating the most at-risk areas. Fires are also occurring in Chelidoni (ancient Olympia) and near Irakleia, Ilia where the flames have advanced rapidly due to gusts of wind causing panic among residents. Large fire in Aude in southern France

A fire that exceeds the size of Paris described by authorities as a disaster on an unprecedented scale has burned over thirteen thousand hectares of vegetation in Aude in southwestern France near the borders with Spain; there is one reported victim and several injuries, with around two thousand firefighters engaged in battling the flames supported by firefighting planes. The first outbreaks occurred near the village of Ribaute in Aude a region known for its vineyards and extensive tree cover, and due to the hot, dry and windy weather the flames have spread quickly, for example all residents of the village of Jonquières were evacuated leaving a scene of sadness and desolation almost lunar with over half or three-quarters burned. Cloudbursts and floods in southern Taiwan

There would be at least four victims and seventy-seven injured in southern Taiwan due to torrential rainfall and strong cloudbursts resulting in floods deemed devastating in some areas, with over two and a half meters of rain falling in just a few days. Almost six thousand people have been evacuated by the authorities, while rescuers delivering aid to those affected by these record floods are also searching for any missing persons buried by the numerous landslides that occurred; the city of Tainan in the south of the country has been among the hardest hit by a heavy cloudburst. Landslide in a village of Darfur in Sudan

There would be over a thousand victims from a landslide that swept through a village in western Sudan in the Darfur region, being described as one of the most severe disasters in terms of casualties in the recent history of this African country. It seems that only one person survived after the landslide following days of intense rainfall virtually demolishing the village of Tarasin in the Marrah mountains and international aid is being requested for an extreme event deemed unusual in scale. The volcanic area where the village is located is a world heritage site, with the mountain reaching three thousand meters characterized by a climate marked by low temperatures and heavy rainfall in the surrounding areas, more than nine hundred kilometers west of the capital Khartoum. The landslide occurred in an area accessible only on foot or by animals.

Little preparation in China for flooding

Chinese authorities have reportedly declared that they were poorly prepared to face the heavy rains leading to flooding that affected vast areas in the north of the country, forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes; meanwhile, the death toll has risen to forty-four with nine missing. The suburbs of the capital Beijing are said to be among the hardest hit and in general disaster prevention and mitigation plans should be adopted, for example with infrastructure in high places. It is noted that over five hundred seventy millimeters of rain fell in Miyun when typically in a year six hundred millimeters fall in Beijing. Strong earthquake in Kamchatka in Russia

A measurable quake with a magnitude between 8.8 and 8.7 shook the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia with the epicenter near Petropavlovsk at a depth of about nineteen kilometers, is described as one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the area resulting in several injuries that are not severe, evacuations, and a tsunami alert in the regions of the North Pacific. According to experts aftershocks could last for up to a month, and concerning the tsunami a second wave could arrive even a day later; for instance, the first wave caused the precautionary evacuation of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. Rescuers are searching for any missing persons among the houses swept away by landslides and mud in the affected areas providing aid to people in need. Flooding in Manila in the Philippines

There would be at least six victims, six missing and nearly seventy thousand evacuees in the capital of the Philippines Manila due to the tropical storm "Wipha" and resulting floods, torrential rainfall has affected Metro Manila and also surrounding provinces. These are reported to be among the worst floods in Manila, with operations and schools rendered unusable, significant inconveniences, and many people forced to move through the water, using boats or clinging to makeshift floating objects. Floods in southern and central South Korea

There would be at least three victims due to floods favored by intense monsoon-like rainfall affecting vast areas of southern and central South Korea, it is also reported that over a thousand people have been evacuated, along with roads transformed into rivers with cars floating and carried away, and hundreds of schools flooded and damaged. The locality of Gwangju was particularly affected with four hundred and twenty millimeters of rain, and central and southern areas of Chungcheong province experienced damage and inconvenience for the population. Sometimes rescuers had to intervene with boats to help people trapped in their homes. As often happens in cases of flooding there have been complaints about water management to improve prevention in order to avoid significant damage.

Canada still grappling with wildfires and issues

Due to the smoke emitted from the wildfires burning vegetation in Ontario and the Prairies air quality in Toronto is among the worst in the world leading to a warning for the population to limit outdoor activities especially considering the extreme heat affecting the city with particular attention to vulnerable individuals, visibility is limited and the use of masks is advised; moreover there are significant hardships for the population in the Pikangikum First Nation also due to wildfires that have burned energy distribution poles leaving vast areas in darkness (sometimes food reserves are scarce). Shifting focus to the United States the search efforts have resumed for around one hundred sixty missing people from the recent floods in Texas after heavy rains and severe weather; in the meantime the death toll has risen to at least one hundred thirty-two.
