Preventing fires to limit damage The fires that are devastating the hills of Los Angeles with a provisional toll of twenty-four victims, several serious injuries and calculations of the extensive damage raise questions about what interventions to take to limit the damage in case a similar situation could theoretically also occur in other areas of the world affected by climate change; in fact, adequate prevention could avoid significant disasters. Some say that for example sufficient water reserves must be available to feed the hydrants (it seems that in the Palisade area there was no pressure when the firefighters arrived), then pay attention to possible triggers of fires such as fireworks that remain on the ground as well as dry brushwood and dried plants, make sure that fires cannot spread quickly by tracing firebreak avenues. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Jan 13, 2025 ![]() ![]() Monitored the overheating trajectory Every month in 2024 has been the heat or the second highest since global temperatures began to be monitored, some speak of an incredible trajectory (if for example we look at the trend since 1940), while others argue that it is necessary to verify the anomaly in decades to confirm it; but by now it would seem clear that with a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of 422 parts per million, it is illusory to think that in a few decades the situation regarding global warming will improve. The planet is steadily well above one and a half degrees Celsius of average temperature, a value that had already been indicated as a limit not to be exceeded in order not to have to suffer the disastrous effects of extreme weather phenomena; however there is talk of possible potential to change this trajectory by exiting the era of fossil fuels. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Jan 10, 2025 n°: 5844 ![]() A fire devours the hills of Los Angeles Strong gusts of wind make it difficult and almost impossible for firefighters to take action as they try to deal with a practically uncontrollable fire that has advanced rapidly in the hills of Los Angeles forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes, there is talk of many houses destroyed (..two victims and several wounded) and about thirteen thousand structures threatened by fires. It is expected that the wind may intensify at night and continue for days, forming vortices with gusts that can reach one hundred and sixty kilometers per hour. Half a million users are at risk of being left without electricity supply with over twenty-eight thousand already in the dark. Changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues to report the difficult situation of the localities affected by the earthquake in the Everest area due to the cold, then there is talk of almost two hundred injured. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Jan 08, 2025 n°: 5842 ![]() High number of fires in the Amazon in 2024 Last year the Amazon rainforest recorded the highest number of fires in seventeen years, then there are months of intense drought that have fueled the fires, forty-two percent more than in 2023; however if calculate from satellite observations the total area that went up in smoke seems to be the lowest in years. The Brazilian authorities said they would commit to the protection of Amazon forests also in view of the COP30 conference in November in the city of Belem in the Amazon. Away across South America last month suffered from a severe drought, at least according to data collected from a European atmospheric monitoring service. The columns of smoke that emanated from the fires reached great distances, carrying soot to large cities such as Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and San Paulo. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Jan 03, 2025 n°: 5839 ![]() Systems for better tsunami prevention The warning systems currently installed around the globe to warn the population of the arrival of a potentially disastrous tsunami would not be entirely efficient, at least as far as a check carried out on the signal buoys that have batteries that last about two years and need to be replaced is concerned. Only fifty percent of the buoys were operational although apparently enough to operate the system that was designed to provide coverage even in these cases, but some argue that better prevention would be needed; then the systems are sometimes outdated as technology, this twenty years after the Banda Aceh disaster and the tsunami caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in the Indian Ocean with consequent waves over thirty meters high that literally swept away entire villages leaving signs that are still visible. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 27, 2024 n°: 5834 ![]() Desertification in alarming increase It is estimated from the data of a new study that one billion and two hundred thousand people and an area of about one and a half billion hectares larger as the size of Antarctica is affected by desertification with unreassuring forecasts for the future. To cope with desertification, almost two hundred countries recently attended a COP16 conference in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, but with little results about the discussions held by the United Nations to combat desertification (UNCCD) and this after a whole series of conferences for example on biodiversity in Colombia, on reducing the use of plastic in South Korea, on the financing of countries affected by climate change in Azerbaijan with in practice little light and many shadows. Needless to say that without interventions the fertile soil it will become progressively less and less productive and this will have significant consequences on the displacement of populations and the cost of food. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 21, 2024 n°: 5831 ![]() A line of credit for Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago To be able to recover from devastating climate disasters with storms, cloudbursts and floods, the small islands of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago would need a credit line to finance reconstruction, but the rules of finance put them in an unfavorable position (this, as for all countries, must be achieved over the years by keeping the accounts in order) which makes them even more vulnerable. A global trading system should be proposed that takes into account climate change adaptation; then only thirteen out of thirty-nine small islands have a financial quotation, most of them low, and countries such as Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines do not have it at all. Sustainable growth requires financial balancing if we do not want to penalise countries affected by climate change, often without causing it. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 14, 2024 n°: 5825 ![]() Worrying transformation of the Arctic tundra The surface temperatures of the air monitored in one year in the Arctic tundra would have reached a record that places them in second place since 1900 in this not very positive ranking of warming, so much so that there is talk of a dramatic transformation with frequent fires with the release of large quantities of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere and while for millennia the frozen soil has retained these powerful climate-changing gases, now it tends to release them; so this could worsen the situation from the point of view of climate change. Obviously what happens in the Arctic tundra does not remain confined to that scenario, but has global consequences even if there could also be a secondary effect given by the absorption of carbon linked to the growth of vegetation which then overheats the air with a subsequent further increase in temperatures. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 12, 2024 n°: 5823 ![]() Simple devices to monitor landslides With climate change, landslides are becoming more and more frequent, for this purpose Canadian researchers have developed simple devices to monitor the territory using microphones and rain buckets that collect rainwater equipped with sensors connected to an analysis software that warns in the event of a landslide risk, this control system (seems already effectively tested in one case in British Columbia) allows the area to be made safe possibly affected and save lives in case of danger. To be noted changing the subject but remaining on naturalistic issues two victims recently in Great Britain due to the storm called "Darragh" characterized by strong gusts of wind and storm surges with high waves on the coasts, particularly affected by the wave of bad weather the South of Wales and the west of the country with large areas left without energy. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 10, 2024 n°: 5821 ![]() Planting trees wisely in suitable places In the boreal and arctic regions to the north, planting trees could be a not very effective solution to mitigate climate change, although it is usually almost always useful in other regions of the planet as well as being an ecological method also useful for preserving biodiversity and the ecosystem; In fact, a study would have shown that trees by shading do not allow the sun's rays to reflect on the snow with consequent overheating, so the balance with the capture of carbon dioxide can be unfavorable. Planting trees also means moving the soil with the release into the atmosphere of climate-changing gases that the permafrost retains; On the other hand, in boreal regions where trees have been cut down and have suffered damage from fires, it is useful to proceed with planting trees by re-establishing proper tree cover of the ground. e-mail: info@salutary.eu Tel: +39 338 1809310 Date: Dec 05, 2024 n°: 5817 ![]() Various and natural * The author doesn't assume some kind of responsibility for the bad use of the articles councils (all rights are reserved) |
