New rules for e-cigarettes in Australia

The Australian authorities would have proposed new restrictive regulations to avoid the spread of electronic cigarettes especially to protect the health of young people from the use of these devices that may seem attractive; in fact, import controls have been introduced on packaging and printing methods, colors, smells and flavors used in packaging accused of trying to create a new generation nicotine addicts of these unhealthy products. It promotes in particular with an aspect of the pharmaceutical type packaging a use for people who want to find help to quit smoking traditional cigarettes in order to avoid the use that has now become almost recreational in the country, especially for younger people with an appearance and location of the products on sale that resembles that of chocolate bars and lollies.

Too much time spent in front of video screens

It is estimated that by 2050 fifty percent of the world's population will be short-sighted, at least according to the opinion of international organizations that warn that people spend too much time every day in front of the video screens of smartphones and computers, then in addition to myopia in which the structure of the eye changes lengthening there would be a sharp increase in another irreversible problem that damages vision such as dry eye with red eyes and increasingly dry with consequent burning due to atrophy of the glands that lubricate the eyes with tears. To avoid these pathologies should limit the time spent in front of these screens and take breaks, then put the screen to watch in a position that allows easy vision and every twenty minutes take twenty seconds of pause and fully blink twenty times.

Making mud and straw houses in Hungary

An ecological alternative proposed in Hungary to cement, responsible for eight percent of global emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, would be to make mud and straw bricks to be used for very sustainable constructions since they are really cheap and guarantee excellent insulation as well as being fireproof and non-toxic. The materials to make a brick in a minute are easily found in Hungary and it takes about twenty thousand to build a house that will not need air conditioning; in fact, mud and straw houses regulate humidity to a fair value and are also suitable for asthmatic people. A poor choice that dates back as a technology to Neolithic times that has unexpected performance from the point of view of ecological footprint and energy efficiency, then does not pollute at the end of the life cycle of the bricks.

Unbreathable air in Bangkok Thailand

The concentration of PM2.5 fine particles in the capital of Thailand would be fourteen times higher than the levels recommended by international health organizations recommending, according to new guidelines established last year, that PM2.5 particles are no more than five micrograms per cubic meter, arguing that even low concentrations can cause significant health risks. In Bangkok and nearby a kind of thick fog consisting of pollution of vehicles and seasonal fires of brushwood on agricultural land makes it difficult to breathe, while there are those who complain that they burn their eyes, then the visibility is reduced and the authorities suggest the population to stay at home avoiding heavy work outdoors; in fact, the weather conditions with stagnant air favor the accumulation of pollutants. It is estimated that every year in the world about four million two hundred thousand people are victims of pollution.

Covid prevention with masks and distancing

The forecasts based on computer models warn of the risk of new virulent pandemic waves also due to the increase in serious cases in some intensive care units and in general of outbreaks of infections, so as always it will be prudent to protect oneself with masks and appropriate distancing. For those who cannot stand prolonged use, it may be useful to go outdoors and remove it at regular intervals to let the skin breathe and take a break (perhaps even with relaxation exercises). It is not clear what the real impact on the population is of two new Omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that manage in part to circumvent the protection of vaccines or antibodies formed by infections with previous Covid variants. A dozen states have established rules for travelers from China, a country that does not provide reliable data on victims and infections.

New biodegradable cosmetic products

The microplastics present in cosmetic products are very dangerous in the environment and end up in the food chain and in practice in our dishes, tissues and organs; so to try to solve the problem researchers would have developed a glitter biodegradable and even edible based on eucalyptus tree cellulose. The small vegetable flakes reflect light at different angles with colored effects that shine in a varied way simulating the same effect given by plastic materials without polluting the environment and any toxicity in case of involuntary ingestion. This type of cosmetic can be used as well as makeup for skin, nails and hair shine for parties and recreational purposes also for any type of object to shine such as food and cakes (subject to food certification not yet obtained).

Keep the nose warm to defend against viruses

When go outdoors with low temperatures from a warm environment you expose the body to the attack of respiratory infections and according to researchers the immune system is more effective against these attacks for example if the temperature of the nose does not drop from thirty-seven and thirty-two degrees Celsius (about five degrees due to the effect of the change from indoor to outside); in fact, laboratory tests would have shown how nasal cells are better able to counteract viruses by maintaining the body's temperatures at the right level, at least with regard to two rhinoviruses and a non-COVID coronavirus typical of the winter season. The experimental tests were carried out using a substance that mimics a viral infection to stimulate the reaction of the nasal mucosa by volunteers who had this thin layer in the nose removed to surgically remove polyps.

A planet unsuitable for eight billion people

For many regions of the world that are already struggling with the scarcity of resources due to climate change, the increase in the world population will only make the situation worse, since every person needs energy, food, water and a place to live and the planet can hardly offer sustainable solutions to eight billion individuals, considering that only eleven years ago probably seven billion was already too much. For example further clogging for overpopulated cities increases emissions due to queues, lack of fluidity in activities, difficulty maintaining balance with nature and sustaining biodiversity in a fragile ecosystem; then among the areas most at risk regarding an unhealthy imbalance is talk about African countries and in general the coastal areas of the world also threatened by rising seas.

Camouflage of the tobacco industry

It is estimated that tobacco is responsible for more than seven million victims a year plus over a million for indirect smoking due to unintentional exposure to cigarette smoke, so many more than the SARS-CoV-2 virus; but the tobacco industry apparently tries to disguise itself with a so-called "greenwashing" (washing with fake environmentalist colors) by distributing, for example, hand washing soaps in anti-Covid function, leaflets and disinfectant kits. Even more questionable is the adoption of charitable and philanthropic initiatives with the profits deriving from the sale of cigarettes while in reality child labor is often exploited, deforestation and pesticide use are increased. International health organizations warn that victims from tobacco smoke could increase to ten million a year by 2050; in fact, it is estimated that half of smokers become seriously ill from diseases related to smoking.

A cigarette-free future in New Zealand

It is estimated that every year there are five thousand victims in New Zealand due to cigarette smoking, fourteen a day with two out of three smokers who will lose their lives for this reason, one of the main causes in the country on which to intervene in the prevention of premature deaths; so the authorities would have decided to ban young people from 2027 the purchase of cigarette packets in addition to reducing the number of authorized tobacco resales and cutting nicotine levels in all products, in stages starting from 2024 - 2025. With these measures is aim at a generation free from tobacco from 2027 (it will also be necessary to agree with the Maori health authorities from the end of 2022) considering that four out of five smokers start before eighteen years even if it is feared in the black market for this type of sales.
