First quit smoking and then think about COVID-19

The irrational attitudes of some inhabitants of Italian regions affected by coronavirus infections with queues to buy the latest masks and various disinfectants (without considering the reessa at supermarkets) should remind that as a percentage many more people lose their lives due to the unhealthy consequences of cigarette smoking and obesity than those infected with COVID-19; although caution is in any case appropriate to avoid the epidemic by avoiding crowded places and thoroughly washing the hands, but continuing to live normally. Perhaps in the affected areas the authorities should wash the streets and places very frequented with the help of disinfectants; in fact, it has not rained for a long time and this could fauvoring the spread of the virus outbreak, a bit like fires in dry vegetation. Keeping fit and exercising can be useful at the preventive level.

Heatwave in Australia

High temperatures monitored in large areas of Australia with a record of almost forty-one degrees Celsius in the city of Perth (capital of the west of the country) and thus exceeding that of six years ago, are set to increase further; at least according to the weather forecast that announce a heat wave with peaks of forty-five degrees and maybe even higher. Temperatures are also very high in Sydney where the air is unbreathable and many people have been hospitalized due to the inhaled particulate matter released by columns of smoke that have been rising for weeks since bushfires in New South Wales and reach large distances; declared a state of emergency for seven days, while the population protests the lack of sensitivity of the ammnistrators to the climate issue, of having done little to reduce emissions and in practice the city is almost unlivable.

More health problems for e-cigarettes

A large number of cases (over a thousand including eighteen victims) of e-cigarette smoke inhalation diseases would have been reported in the United States, while a Canadian study warns that they are not very effective for those who want to use them as a ploy to try to quit smoking; in fact, only fifteen to twenty percent seem to succeed in this attempt and sixty to seventy percent continue to smoke paper and tobacco cigarettes in addition to electronic cigarettes. To convince younger people to buy e-cigarettes, it seems that the most advanced social media techniques that also use so-called social influencers to increase sales have been used; then the latest devices deliver more nicotine in the areas or there are fragrant components present in charging liquids that can cause damage to blood vessels. Health authorities are also trying to identify the substances responsible for severe irritation in the pulmonary alveoli.

Microplastics in the air in Krakow

By analysing the composition of various pollutants, Polish researchers would find microplastic particles in the air of the city of Krakow, which were derived from air pollutants that had deposited during the winter on a roof, declaring themselves surprised by the presence of such a quantity of microplastics consisting of fibres, microballs and fragments among the polluting dusts while they are still working to identify the exact composition. Plastic products are usually manufactured with thousands of types of synthetic polymers, but even without a detailed analysis of the composition it is possible to identify the various plastic fragments; then with regard to the health effects of their inhalation or ingestion are not yet available sufficient studies. It is generally preferable to wear cotton clothes to prevent plastic fibers with use and washing from ending up in the environment.

Electronic cigarettes harmful to lung cells

By studying the harmful effects of the liquid contained in three different brands of aromatic refills for e-cigarettes (even non-nicotine-containing) the Australian researchers would have found that inhaled smoke can kill epithelial cells of the airways; moreover, vapours can hinder the immune system which then tries to remove these cells from the body. It should be noted that the number of twelve to seventeen year olds who were non-smokers and tried e-cigarettes would triple from 2013 to 2016. It should be reported by changing the subject but remaining on news concerning the respiratory system that the particulate matter contained in the fumes of exhausted vehicles and coal-fired energy production plants can reach the placenta (accumulating not favoring the passage of nutrients) and for example dark particles would have been found from the part near the fetus, but apparently without passing this protective barrier.

Smog for smoke from fires in Indonesia

The fires that have been affecting the rainforest of Sumatra and Kalimantan for weeks raise clouds of smoke dense with particulate matter that reaches great distances and greatly worsens air quality with health damage for thousands of people, then smoking it can carry bacteria that promote infections as it appears to have happened in the case of a four-month-old baby who died of pneumonia and meningitis. Indonesian health authorities reportedly monitored more than one hundred-six thousand patients for respiratory conditions in Palembang in South Sumatra, over sixty-one thousand in the city of Jambi and over twenty-three thousand in Palangkaraya in central Kalimantan. It should be noted by completely changing the subject but remaining on issues related to respiratory diseases that is growing the focus on e-cigarettes and their possible dangerousness after some documented deaths in the United States.

Unbearable heat across Europe

After the unbearable heat wave that hit France and in particular the capital Paris with temperatures of almost forty-two Celsius degrees the country authorities would be studying a strategy to increase vegetation in the city; In fact, for example the bitumen under the sun exceeds fifty Celsius degrees helping to form unhealthy islands and heat reserves that keep temperatures high in the city even at night, but in the shade of vegetation this temperature is reduced to about thirty-five degrees. Useful then to make more livable cities replace asphalt with a mixture formed by sand and gravel or other light and porous materials that are often used in public parks. To teport then the records temperature reached in the Netherlands (over forty degrees in the municipality of Gilze Rijen), Belgium, Germany and Austria where a child who had fallen asleep in a car parked in the sun was found lifeless; very hot even in Italy especially in Florence.

African-matrix heat wave over Italy

The anticyclone that from the Sahara desert in Africa makes its influence felt throughout Europe, increasingly replacing over the years with the traditional summer anticyclone of the Azores that originates off the Atlantic Ocean, is causing temperatures to rise in Italy so much so that in cities such as Ferrara, Florence and Terni heat peaks are expected around forty Celsius degrees even if the humidity seems not to be too high and therefore a fairly dry heat is more bearable (unlike what happened these days in New York, Philadelphia, Washington and other midwestern cities in the United States where oppressive heat due to high humidity has put a strain on population resistance). It is worth noting changing the subject but always regarding the high temperatures the algae blooms monitored in several European beaches due also to the poor oxygenation of the water, a phenomenon that causes putrefaction and bad smell as happened for example in Saint-Brieuc in northwest France.

Heatwave over New York

The high temperatures monitored in New York have forced the authorities to urge citizens to be cautious and avoid traveling, as well as setting up a rescue center to allow people without air conditioning to cool down (the fifty-year-old landing celebrations were also cancelled in the city); in fact, a heat wave is declared after three days of scorching heat considering that after two really hot days the forecast announces for tomorrow temperatures around thirty-eight Celsius degrees with high humidity rate that means to perceive a much greater heat. The whole region is affected by the heat wave, after a storm a few days ago that also caused a casualty, but for the metropolis some define the situation as terrible due to the formation of heat islands, then it will also have to limit air conditioners to avoid overloading the power grid.

A sustainable lawn for the nature

The satisfaction of having a nice lawn around your home could have significant implications for the environment; in fact, to keep the green coloration of the turf and avoid the so-called weed we have to use fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that end up polluting the soil and the whole ecosystem, then in the summer periods it will be necessary to water with large amounts of water; so according to the researchers, if look at these factors and their overall energy share, the lawn ends up emitting more carbon dioxide than it can absorb. It seems that the lawn is a kind of gimmick devised in medieval times in order to be able to spot friends or enemies from an appropriate distance from the vantage points of the castles; then over time it has become a kind of status symbol for rich people who compete about the perfect sheaing of the turf, but it would be better to leave the natural (and salutary) look with the typical flowers that attract pollinating insects.
