A European law on artificial intelligence

A European regulation would have been approved [still not came into force] that seeks to regulate applications based on artificial intelligence that violate the rights of citizens, for example not to be recognized by facial images taken with cameras and processed by algorithms, then the analysis of biometric and sensitive data; this is the first time that action has been taken in this thorny area. In the meantime generative artificial intelligence developers continue to strengthen the sector with agreements with important and authoritative French and Spanish media, but there is no shortage of controversy over possible copyright abuses with articles used without consent, not to mention that even a company that builds chips that support artificial intelligence was recently accused of using books to train neural networks without consent.

Artificial Intelligence video development

By writing a text it will be possible to instantly get a short video of generative artificial intelligence in response (but this feature is not yet available to the public), at least according to the developers of this questionable technology which surprised observers of the experiment with the high quality of the automatically generated video and who also raised fears about the ethical and social consequences. Recently during the elections in Indonesia some complained about the presence of a video judged to be misleading made with artificial intelligence to influence the vote visible on a social network. Finally, this time in the United States, there is the controversy over the exaggerated use of social networks by a young audience sometimes with serious health consequences so much so that cases of serious addiction have been cited in New York.

Artificial intelligence of little use for the climate

Many people use artificial intelligence thinking that it can be useful to combat climate change with applications that make the best use of available resources, but they do not take into account that any request to servers and data centers that support neural networks requires large amounts of energy to operate; some say that in the case of extensive use of generative artificial intelligence which is needed for example to activate the functions of new small devices that could replace smartphones coal-fired power plants will also have to be used. Other risks derive from computer models attacks and the possible use of artificial intelligence in elections to influence the vote as has already happened in previous cases with social networks, but at a much higher level of sophistication with images that simulate reality almost perfectly.

Artificial intelligence for news, images, voices

A generative AI-based and partly real news channel is expected to be launched in March in the United States, is talking about personalized news depending on the interests and preferences of readers; then there is the increasingly widespread use in general of images manipulated with programs supported by computerized neural networks, without considering the use of the voices of deceased actors who act with the intervention of artificial intelligence. It is estimated that in the near future about sixty percent of human activities will be affected by the intervention of artificial intelligence. Of note changing the subject but remaining on technological issues the discovery in France of a vast deposit of natural "white" hydrogen in Lorraine, the so-called green one requires the use of energy obtained from the sun or wind.

Artificial intelligence misinformation

The short-term risks of incorrect information linked to artificial intelligence were recently highlighted by speakers at a world economic forum, while in the long term extreme weather events and imbalances in the global ecosystem are worrying. Geopolitical tensions linked to these factors can corrode the resilience of societies and lead to conflicts and consequently to the contagion of these unhealthy mechanisms and polarizations. Of note changing the subject the controversy over the use of artificial intelligence to identify military targets to hit in recent conflicts; in fact, for time some have been denouncing blunders and inaccuracies of all kinds obtained by querying well-known applications supported by artificial intelligence with a low percentage of reliability and sometimes even absurdity.

Unfair appreciation of artificial intelligence

People who appreciate generative artificial intelligence as a progress that will allow humans to solve many difficult problems do not consider that its use requires considerable energy resources, then in many areas it provides results with a low percentage of reliability and sometimes even absurd. Neural networks do nothing more than try to imitate the functioning of the human brain, but with the advantage to have available a huge amount of data taken from internet servers (entered by human users) and from databases connected to energy plants that have a significant impact on the planet; then being able to make an animated face of a person say anything with the simulation of artificial intelligence and in any language is according to some very dangerous and this technology with images of false alternative realities could be used to influence public opinion.

Students using artificial intelligence

The professors of a well-known English school seem to have encouraged students to use generative artificial intelligence that would help them better write homework to be discussed with the teacher, some say that perhaps this measure was necessary since students had already been using it for some time even if secretly; but the question remains whether in this way instead of exercising one's personal skills with the study one does not end up becoming dependent on a machine. Discussions then for the dismissal of journalists and in practice entire newsrooms replaced by artificial intelligence which; however, in general it is not very precise and indeed there is no shortage of reports of deviations and inaccuracies of all kinds without considering the falsehoods that can be artfully fabricated by the machine with fake but incredibly misleading images.

A European law on artificial intelligence

In what is described as the start of a historic path to pass a European law regulating the use of artificial intelligence, a provisional agreement was reportedly reached in a marathon for the approval of proposals that lasted three days. It is a matter of harmonizing artificial intelligence with the fundamental values of the European Union so that they can be respected, on the impact on the future of these computer models, with rules and lists of prohibitions for example regarding the use of biometric identification at a distance in public spaces, then on a clear distinction between normal models and those based on artificial intelligence. Some say that trying to regulate artificial intelligence is like trying to stop an avalanche with the hands, and that should instead pull off plug to all neural networks by turning off their connections.

A questionable year of artificial intelligence

A year after the launch of a well-known application based on generative artificial intelligence and now widely used, even when it would be possible to continue to use less invasive technologies, the controversy about the risk of human extinction and misinformation on an industrial scale does not cease (for example regarding the use of artificial and incredibly misleading images). There is also a risk of dependence on artificial intelligence as is happening with smartphones; in fact, while once it was pointed out to public ridicule if owned one of the first models of bulky mobile phones, now it seems that people cannot leave the house without having a smartphone in their pocket and if by chance they have forgotten they immediately come back to get it, without considering the kids who spend the day bent over the hypnotic screens of these technological "traps".

Sustainably fuel-powered aerial flight

While waiting for planes equipped with electric engines and powered by hydrogen (green and from non-polluting supply chains), a flight powered by one hundred percent sustainable fuel would have departed from London to land in New York, demonstrating the potential for possible reduction of emissions from the aviation sector and achieving zero emissions by 2050. This fuel is made from waste and is already used minimally by airlines in addition to kerosene and allows to reduce emissions by more than seventy percent but is more expensive (some say, however, that jet fuel is often tax-free and many routes covered by air flights economically supported for tourist reasons). Since the entire aviation sector is very polluting the best choice remains to choose if possible other means of locomotion.
