More years to have clean nuclear energy

Researchers who have announced that they have made progress in the development of safe and clean nuclear fusion by doubling the energy obtained in an experiment carried out in England specify that years of technological innovation will still be needed before a special plant can become a reality; then the amount of energy obtained is very small and in practice equivalent to that needed to run, for example, a sixty-liter kettle of water. It is the same energy process used by the Sun and stars obtained by the fusion of two atoms at really high temperatures without polluting, radioactive waste and greenhouse gases. Of note changing the subject of the serious energy crisis in Europe due to a reduction in gas supplies with a consequent increase in prices that put a strain on the economy of entire countries.

Green steel for sustainable production

Steel is a metal present in many industrial products, almost everywhere and in particular in components related to construction and transport, bringing with it its polluting charge quantifiable in almost seven percent of global carbon dioxide emissions; therefore, according to some the production of "green" steel with low environmental impact should be promoted for more sustainable production. India is one of the largest steel producers with coal-fired plants so much so that every ton of metal produced twice, as much (in terms of imagine) of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. In Germany it is planned to use green hydrogen to produce steel in addition to replacing metal with other materials for the construction industry. To be noted by changing the subject but remaining on technological issues the absurd competition lately between self-driving cars.

Technological reforestation in Indonesia

Improving the sustainability of the forestry sector in Indonesia also with innovative technologies is essential to protect the highly degraded environment, for example given the serious damage detected in three provinces in Kalimantan recently affected this month by floods favored by floods of the Kapuas River and tens of thousands of homes submerged by water especially in Sintang with consequent mass evacuations. Technological innovation for the sustainable exploitation of forests in addition to limiting damage to the territory of floods makes possible to optimize the profits in a future-oriented perspective, without considering that it is necessary to support the competition. It is also about optimizing the timber processing chain where technology can play a role in preserving the forest heritage for the next generations.

Transition to renewable energy too slow

The volatility of energy prices in many markets is highlighting how the transition to renewable energy has been too slow and the cost of goods is destined to increase as a result due to the turbulence of demand. It seems that in Brazil among the population with less economic possibilities are forced to choose whether to pay for food or electricity and in Europe wonder if in the event of a cold winter will have sufficient gas reserves also to support the economy and agriculture (since many production chains can be connected to the availability and price of gas as well as other fossil fuels). The twenty most industrialized economies in the world since the start of 2020 would have invested more in the search for new sources of fossil fuels than in clean energy despite the Paris agreements on reducing polluting emissions.

Cyber attack on the Lazio region in Italy

Following a computer intrusion into the computer system of the Lazio region in Italy the health system for booking vaccines would no longer be accessible to the public since the data with the so-called ransom viruses have been encrypted (is perhaps talking about foreign origin), the incident is investigated judged rather serious and which partially blocks the correct provision of health services with consequent inefficiencies and inconveniences for the population even if the sensitive data according to the authorities are partly secure being on another server. There could be a slowdown in the Covid-19 vaccination campaign and we will try to proceed manually to move it forward, controversy over the security flaw of a certain magnitude while some speak of paralysis of the system and that opens a fairly worrying scenario from a technological point of view.

Misinformation about vaccines by social media

Many people in the world give up getting vaccinated having been influenced by social media misinformation (carried out with various implausible news), but this attitude could hinder the vaccination campaign and favor the formation of variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus possibly even more virulent and dangerous than those already in circulation such as the Delta and the Gamma. In the meantime the cases of so-called "Long Covid" are multiplying in which the subjects complain that the consequences of the contagion last for long periods of time sometimes even in young subjects; therefore getting vaccinated could be useful to avoid the decidedly unhealthy effects of the virus on the body. Of note by changing the subject the controversy regarding the use by some governments of an Israeli "no-click" virus, this time of a technological type, which infects electronic devices allowing complete control of all the installed applications.

Improving energy batteries in volatile markets

The world's energy networks are not adapted to the non-constant demands of a volatile market also as a result of climate change with heatwaves that push the use of air conditioners that absorb large amounts of energy for the refrigeration of environments (although much depends on their thermal insulation and plant efficiency); therefore the capacity to stockpiling energy in batteries should be improved, then often happens that in the transition to renewable energy not enough batteries are installed to cope with peak demand. In the case of wind turbines in the absence of wind it is not possible to cope with the energy demand or solar panels do not work in the evening hours and it is difficult to make predictions about the tightness of energy networks and any serious damage to systems if they are not supported by back-up power batteries.

A truly deranged boat selfie

It lengthens the long list of people who have lost their lives taking a selfie with their smartphones; in fact, apparently seven people drowned in Indonesia and two were missing after the boat capsized due to the movement of the twenty passengers who grouped to a side to take a picture at Boyolali regency in Central Java falling into the water. It is also investigated for negligence in the conduct of the vessel which in addition to being overloaded was piloted by a boy. To be noted by changing the topic but remaining on technological issues the considerable environmental impact calculated for the purchase on the web of a well-known electric car with the electronic money; in practice an uneae friendly choice to mint coins without counting the time to balance environmental emissions (compared to fossil fuels) during the industrial production of the vehicle.

Renewable technologies for developing countries

Although much progress has been made in the transition to renewable energy it is estimated that in 2019 eighty-one percent of the world's primary energy was still based on fossil fuels, then according to a study only ten percent of one hundred and fifteen countries considered regarding a green global transition maintained a correct trajectory in this regard. Developing countries always maintain high demand for fossil fuels as economic growth is often associated with increases in energy spending, but climate change caused by burning them ends up making in the long-term situation worse. For example in Canada researchers to stimulate the energy transition propose to mimic the strategies adopted for anti-smoking campaigns on cigarette packets that would have succeeded in reducing the number of smokers.

Trapped by algorithms and microprocessors

A future dominated by artificial intelligence is not a science fiction film scenario and there is already talk of strategic choices of some countries based on algorithms and related predictions made by computer programs that exploit the computing power of sophisticated computers; then recently it has made the stop of entire production chains of various consumer goods due to the lack of a small and economical microprocessor that in practice is indispensable for a correct final assembly of many technological products in addition to the shortage of semiconductors available on the market. Computers could also be used against each other, with devices no longer controlled by humans but by species of intelligent machines able to learn and improve their calculation performance until any attempt to shut down will be impossible.
