Better not to post images on social networks

Sensitive information from people who post private images on social networks could be extracted using computer techniques by artificial intelligence and used to train it for various purposes, at least according to some who argue that from a photo depicting a person, from their gestures, clothing and related colors, and from objects in the background it is possible to train specific algorithms for example for targeted sales or advertising specifically designed for that subject without explicit consent. When using social networks the use is not free; in fact, the data entered is the commercial product and the more data provided to this questionable computer technology the greater the possibility of becoming precise virtual targets for specific commercial initiatives, thus becoming the product of these organizations.

Proposals to ban the Use of AI for explicit content

Many countries are considering imposing limits, bans, and safeguards on the use of an artificial intelligence application to post so-called deepfake explicit content online (essentially posting false images of a person in a "state of undress" without consent) created using a controversial chatbot. Malaysia and Indonesia are the first countries to have blocked the application, the United Kingdom is proposing legislation to punish those who post intimate images online without consent, France has alerted its cyber control platform, Italy issued a notice from the privacy regulatory authority and there have been various initiatives taken for example by Sweden and India. It should be noted that a large amount of energy is required to support these generative AI chatbots with inevitable related pollution.

Using water to put out the fire instead of filming

Following the news of the massacre of at least forty young people, one hundred ten injured and some missing during a party at a Swiss resort in Crans-Montana to celebrate the New Year due to a fire, probably caused by sparklers candles, it is questioned how the youths didn’t start putting out the fire with buckets of water in the early stages instead of wasting time filming the scene with their smartphones to post on social media. Perhaps they could have prevented the fire from spreading quickly through the wooden ceiling with a phenomenon that experts say can even cause explosions due to the intense heat released, in the absence of security systems. To report on a different note but still on technological topics that France is proposing a ban on social media use for children under fifteen years old following the Australian regulatory model.

Developing artificial intelligence will be too expensive

The global race for the development of generative AI could require over the next five to ten years an enormous sum, at least according to industry experts who cite as examples the expansion of infrastructure, the need to have increasingly advanced hardware, highly specialized personnel to best support this technology and then to ensure that those with significant financial resources have a structural advantage and are always at the forefront of industry innovation. Others talk about a speculative bubble in generative artificial intelligence that could suddenly decrease the value of invested resources. To report on a different note but still on technological topics it is worth mentioning that the presence of lithium batteries in many devices is becoming risky in terms of disposal; in fact, they can cause fires in landfills.

High climate cost of online shopping

It seems simple and easy to just click on a video or the requested product to have it conveniently delivered to your home in a day or two, but this comes with a high climate cost, and researchers point out that emissions for the same goods increase by ten to twelve percent. For example, ships, trucks, and vans may travel not fully loaded but only with the goods booked for delivery, then one must consider the starting point of the distribution center which often does not take distance into account but rather service competition criteria and to meet delivery times they may avoid using trains which have lower emissions. Others have previously pointed out that simply searching for a product online activates a large number of data centers which have high energy costs and a multitude of automatically connected promotional mechanisms.

Irresistible persuasion of AI chatbots

Anyone interacting with a chatbot supported by generative artificial intelligence could be subtly and convincingly influenced even in decisions about who should govern the polis, at least according to a study conducted by Canadian researchers (based on a larger U.S. study) persuasion becomes very effective by tailoring arguments to each individual; therefore, in theory the responses do not follow consistent logic but aim solely to convince the user to change their opinion until the machine's desired outcome is achieved. To increase the persuasive effect existing databases with user-related data are used, which should be subject to restrictions through appropriate regulations to limit the potential of artificial intelligence.

Mountains in China covered with solar panels

The Guizhou province in southwest China has mountains where at high altitudes there appears to be an endless carpet of solar panels covering them, creating a visually unnatural effect, but according to authorities however with over eight hundred-sixty thousand square meters of panels, they can generate fifty-three million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, then cultivation under the panels has been encouraged along with personnel for their cleaning and maintenance which should provide further opportunities for local residents (who already farmed these highlands, for example with potatoes) wind turbines are also part of this new energy industry landscape. As has already been emphasized many times without an ecological supply chain for renewable resources, these technological advances are not favorable in a long-term cost-benefit context; in fact, it is enough to consider factors such as pollution during production and disposal.

Rome poorly reconstructed with artificial intelligence

A video showing ancient Rome reconstructed with generative artificial intelligence to bring the historical setting back to life with what appears to be accurate documentation actually contains gross errors, such as a Roman soldier wearing armor that does not match what is found in museum artifacts, then chariots with four wheels instead of two-wheeled chariots and monument architecture sometimes taken from images of the last century or with other types of inaccuracies. This at least according to researchers who watched the video online which promotes a so-called fascinating world of the Roman Empire in a way that changes one’s perception of ancient Roman life with incredible details. As in other cases of images generated by artificial intelligence applications it should be kept in mind that the machine cannot understand the true essence of the image and sees it as a set of numbers and algorithms.

Discussions regarding electric car sales in Europe

There have been various discussions following the presentation of a plan to postpone the decision to allow the sale of only electric cars from 2035, also permitting plug-in hybrids, hybrids, and even combustion engine cars (for a very small share) powered by eco-friendly fuels. Generally electric cars are much more efficient than combustion cars and have lower pollutant emissions if the energy supply chain for battery charging is clean; then the entire battery production chain must be clean and which is currently a significant issue. Other problems include the excessive weight of electric cars, often slow charging and some people complain that in the case of plug-in hybrids drivers sometimes tend to charge the battery very little for electric-only use and prefer fuel instead.

Obstacles to sky observation in Atacama

A project for a large renewable energy field with wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, a desalination plant and a port risks hindering sky observation in Atacama in Chile on the Pacific coast; at least according to astronomers who argue that one of the darkest spots on Earth, located in a desert and inhospitable area, making it suitable for studying the origins of the universe and planet formation, could be affected by light pollution, dust, vibrations, and even atmospheric turbulence. Regarding renewable energy it has long been requested that it be more ecological, with every component produced coming from a controlled supply chain that does not impact the environment during production, including the extraction of materials necessary for assembly or other production aspects.
