Eating habits are destabilizing the planet
Almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions come from food, at least according to one study which highlights key factors such as the environmentally harmful role of methane released by cattle, deforestation to make room for crops and the use of fossil energy for fertilizer production. Moreover, even if we stopped burning fossil fuels our eating habits tend to push global temperatures above the set limit of one and a half degrees Celsius of warming. The harmful impact includes loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, water scarcity, and pollution from fertilizers, resulting in an overall alarming situation. As for the dietary regime to follow it is recommended to eat fruits and vegetables with limited consumption of meat and fish, which would also help prevent fifteen million premature deaths.
