Considerations on sunscreen protection factor

In case of prolonged sun exposure it is advisable to use a protective sunscreen, but apparently the sun protection factor that appears stamped with a prominent number on the packaging may not be entirely reliable; in fact, some researchers claim that the protection is broad-spectrum but refers to the protective factor only for the more superficial UVB rays, while UVA (ultraviolet A) rays penetrate more deeply and both can cause DNA damage and consequently potential skin cancers. The higher the protective factor number the longer one can theoretically stay under the sun without getting sunburned, but it also depends on various factors; generally, two milligrams per square centimeter of skin should be applied and the applications in the time would be repeated, and then there would also be ecological considerations regarding these products especially in the case of swimming in the sea.
