Investigations on hantavirus cases on a cruise ship
A cruise ship traveling from Ushuaia in Argentina to Cape Verde triggered health investigations due to three victims of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, with three people sick, one of whom is in critical condition; in fact, there are questions about how the virus could have spread on the ship and in Cape Verde was not given permission to disembark by local authorities due to the potential risk that the virus could infect the local population. Apparently the virus has a rather long incubation period and the passenger initially infected on the ship likely contracted it before boarding. It is also noted that investigations are needed to verify that adequate preventive measures were adopted. This is a virus for which there are no cures or vaccines so early diagnosis and subsequent medical intervention are necessary.
