Surveillance on isolated hantavirus cases
For the moment the risk of potential hantavirus epidemics remains low at least according to the opinion of health authorities who have however increased the level of surveillance on suspected infection cases that came from a cruise ship traveling from Ushuaia in Argentina to Cape Verde, with three victims and nine confirmed cases of infection. The condition of a French woman hospitalized in Paris with a positive hantavirus test has worsened; the symptoms appeared during the transfer flight to the hospital; the virus apparently has a mortality rate between thirty and forty percent, does not spread easily probably through respiratory means or saliva droplets and has a long incubation period. Vigilance is necessary in case of potential virus mutations which could adapt to spread as sometimes happens with this type of virus.
