Increase in confirmed Ebola cases in Congo
There are reported to be seven hundred and eighty-two confirmed cases of Ebola in Congo, with one hundred and eighty-one deaths due to the rare Bundibugyo strain, at least according to Congolese health authorities who also state that the number of cases could be higher because the virus probably was spreading unnoticed for weeks before the Ebola outbreak was confirmed in mid-May in the eastern province of Ituri (where ninety percent of the total cases are recorded), then they also mention a fifty-six percent coverage for monitored contacts; fifty-six people are hospitalized with a typical death rate of twenty-three percent. Some argue that mining activities especially for gold and environmental disruption in the Congo Basin could contribute to spreading deadly diseases due to contact with wild animals, possibly bats in the case of Ebola.
