Testing an antiviral against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola
A first clinical trial of an antiviral to prevent the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reportedly been announced by international health organizations. Reports mention a death toll rising to seven hundred people with nearly two thousand infected; however, the outbreak could be four times larger than the official numbers and there's concern that infections could spread under the radar. Ninety percent of Ebola cases have been recorded in the mineral-rich Ituri province in the northeast of the country, where the first deaths occurred in mid-May, then some highlight the lack of resources to handle the outbreak and cases outside the traced contact list with unclear transmission chains and people dying without reaching a healthcare facility.
